Ghafoor was connecting through Dubai International Airport while on his way to attend a wedding in Istanbul with his family. Ghafoor advocates for democracy and peace in the Middle East.
On July 16th, without a trial, the UAE sentenced Ghafoor in absentia to three years in prison.
A legal defense team has been assembled and is working on the case to successfully clear Asim's name and bring him home to his family in Virginia.
We are turning to the community to raise funds for the legal defense — a very large, unexpected expense. With the urgency, complexity and severity of this matter, we humbly request you to contribute whatever you are able to do so. Every dollar helps.
Given the decades of work Asim has done to protect the civil rights of all Americans, especially our marginalized communities, truly the least we can do is support his legal defense and advocate for his release.
