SMILE supports 770+ families across Canada. 70% of which are struggling to meet basic needs, many of whom are refugees and evacuees from Palestine, Afghanistan, Syria, and Sudan. Increasingly children referred to SMILE are directly impacted by war and displacement, physical and psychological trauma, and long term illness and disability.

Our urgent mission is to assist families through our financial assistance program to provide them with adaptive equipment like walkers and wheelchairs, as well as critical therapy for evacuee families. Our Arabic and Farsi-speaking case workers provide relief, navigate support systems, and advocate for immediate aid, ensuring every kid gets to be a kid.

Why is your urgent donation crucial for these children?

Our families are put in situations where they must choose between essential therapy sessions such as speech and language to help their child communicate, or postpone necessary equipment purchases such as a walker in order to meet their basic needs such as rent and groceries.

In 2023, Muhammad who was diagnosed with a genetic syndrome that causes severe physical disabilities and emotional distress resulted in a year-long hospital stay, including several months in the ICU following an operation. 

Muhammad is one of 68 families that received long-term and palliative care. SMILE intervened during hospitalization, addressing his medical needs and providing emotional support to both Muhammad and his family. The family has been receiving assistance through our Hospital Support Program.
