I've spoken to so many people who have lost loved ones in the last week due to COVID-19.  The grief that they are feeling has been amplified that much more due to restrictions that keep them from seeing their loved ones in their last moments at the hospital.  On top of this, they are not being allowed to partake in any of the funeral rites - washing, shrouding, prayer or burial - after their passing.  I can't imagine how much harder it would be for them if their loved ones couldn't have any of the funeral rites performed at all because of a shortage of funds.  But that is a strong possibility for many in the weeks ahead unless we do something about it.

The last few weeks have been difficult for many of us.   New York City has become an epicenter for COVID-19, impacting the lives of so many people. There are unfortunately large numbers of people falling ill and many who have passed away as well.  Our community at the Islamic Center at New York University has alone seen about 30 people pass away from the coronavius. May Allah grant them peace and entrance into jannah without any judgement, let alone the numbers of people through NYC that are trying to figure all of this out on their own.  We need everyone's help to ensure that all those who have lost ones and are grieving are able to do so with as much peace as possible because we as a community fulfilled our obligation towards them.

The Project

Funds from this effort will go to the Janazah Project based out of Brooklyn, NY. It costs about $2,000 per burial, $20,000 for additional vehicles, in addition to funds needed for basic disinfectants, protective wear, and other materials to ensure the safety of those carrying out the funeral rites. Our hope is to help our sisters in brothers get this important work done and doing out part to help those who cannot afford burial services for their loved ones to help cover those costs.
