Your Sacrifice, Their Right

The Islamic Center at NYU is partnering with Islamic Relief USA to bring food relief to our brothers and sisters in Sudan.

Once a year, on Eid-ul-adha, Muslims around the world pay to feed one another through their Qurbani/Udhiya.  This year, we are asking you to donate your Qurbani/Udhiya to the people of Sudan, the cost of which is $100 and will feed up to 10 families. If you aren't able to give that much, please consider giving whatever you can. People who receive the meat will include widows, orphans, the destitute, the elderly, people with disabilities, and so many more individuals that the world has forgotten.

You also have an option to participate in Qurbani+ (Plus) which will fulfill your Qurbani/Udhiya for this year and provide financial empowerment to a family in need in Sudan for $250.  Qurbani+ is an initiative that seeks to increase the income of families by partnering with them in an Islamic microfinance livelihood project during Eid al-Adha. How it works:

  1. The head of an orphaned family, usually a mother or grandparent, will receive three animals from Islamic Relief up to six months before the Qurbani/Udhiya season.
  2. As the time of Qurbani/Udhiya nears, the fattened animals are sold at market prices to Islamic Relief's Qurbani Program, which generates a profit.
  3. This profit is shared between Islamic Relief and the families at a pre-defined and agreed upon ratio.
  4. The family is provided with enough money for their household needs and other costs, and Islamic Relief is able to reinvest our share into other income-generating activities so even more people can benefit.
  5. All the fattened animals are then made part of the Qurbani distribution for Eid al-Adha to provide the best quality meat for vulnerable people.

Focus on Sudan

Sudan’s history is rife with conflict, both man-made, including the separation of South Sudan in 2011, and natural, including flood emergencies: According to FAO.org, “since the start of 2020, the population of the Sudan has faced numerous challenges including desert locust invasions, which may return and worsen as the current floods improve breeding conditions, and the COVID-19 pandemic that has contributed to the highest annual inflation rate in decades.” As a result, Sudan’s residents have to struggle against these strangling factors to try to make ends meet: 9.6 million people in the country face acute food insecurity at crisis-level or worse!

With all this considered, one thing remains clear: The people of Sudan are resilient and, with the support of donors like you, families in need there can access opportunities to break the chains of poverty and move toward success.

Islamic Relief’s Work In Sudan

Sudan is the first country the Islamic Relief global family provided relief to through a famine emergency response in 1984. Since then, Islamic Relief USA has worked to provide humanitarian aid and development work in the region as permitted by U.S. law. Aid has included emergency response to flood survivors as well as food aid. Our development work has been focused on school rehabilitation, education support, and enhancing the food security and livelihood opportunities for local communities.

Here’s just a sampling of recent efforts for families in need across Sudan

  • Providing emergency aid to families who have recently experienced floods
  • Rehabilitating water and sanitation systems so that communities have easy, safe access
  • Training farmers and fishermen, both male and female, and providing them with the tools and resources to succeed

How You Can Help

As we enter into the blessed first ten days of Dhul Hijjah, please consider giving whatever you can. Whether it's $1, $5 ...  $5000 , every bit will make a difference.  And please keep the people of Sudan and those working to help them in your thoughts and prayers. May Allah reward you for your generosity and give you and your loved ones only the best in this world and in the next. Ameen.
