When Home Isn't Safe: Support DV Survivors During COVID-19

Maryam* (not her real name) is a 48-year-old domestic violence survivor in Queens, New York. For years, she endured physical and verbal abuse in her past two marriages. Now divorced, she lives and supports both her elderly mother, who is a cancer patient, and her 5-year-old son. 

She turned to Turning Point for help when the coronavirus outbreak left her without work and her savings account was running out.

All of Turning Point’s services are completely FREE, and conducted in a CONFIDENTIAL, CULTURALLY, and RELIGIOUSLY SENSITIVE environment.

Alhamdulilah, through our Zakat fund, we provided her with a month’s worth of groceries and connected her with the resources to get her through this unstable time. But there are more women like Maryam we need to help.

Many of us are blessed to quarantine at home to protect ourselves from COVID-19. But for survivors of gender-based violence: home doesn’t always mean protection.

Our COVID assistance means helping survivors like Maryam with groceries, household expenses, medications, and other key essentials. 

We’ve also taken our work online and continue to provide counseling, crisis intervention, and group support to survivors of domestic violence.

What Your Previous Donations Have Done 

Alhamdulilah, in the last fiscal year alone we have: 

• Provided domestic violence services to 92 clients

• Provided anti-bullying workshops and support to over 300 Muslim youth

• Served 47 senior members through our ESOL classes and citizenship preparation 

• 5 of our seniors took and passed the U.S. Citizenship Exam!

• Provided educational resources about DV and elderly abuse & more to 2,566 individuals

Who Are We:

We are the only non-profit organization in NYC to offer systemic, holistic supports to women and families in the Muslim community dealing with the terror and trauma of domestic violence.

For the last 15 years, Turning Point For Women and Families have supported over 3,000 women and girls through crisis intervention, counseling services, legal support, empowerment workshops, securing homes and work for our clients and advocating for those in need -- both young and senior members -- within government, in our mosques, and beyond.

The stigma and taboo are real. But our small team of 8 is on the front lines serving every Muslim woman and family in need every day.
