Domestic violence affects women all over the world — it does not discriminate against race, culture, religion, economic status, or even education level.
1 in 3 women in the US has been a victim of domestic violence. *
53% of American Muslims reported experiencing some form of domestic violence within their lifetime. **

Although we have failed to tackle the issue of domestic violence/abuse and bring an end to it as of yet, MAUSA is making an effort to bring together several prominent scholars, Imams, and community leaders to raise funds for DV survivors. Through the funds we raise, we will be supporting a safe space located in New York City for survivors, including children. We will also be providing vital services for gender-based violence victims in Somalia that allow and encourage women to become self-sufficient and leave abusive homes

How will we provide assistance to DV survivors?

U.S:

  • Build Muslim-led safe spaces that will provide shelter for both Muslim and non-Muslim women and children
  • Provide medical, legal, and psychosocial counseling services
  • Conduct awareness campaigns
  • Train Imams around the country on how to communicate with victims and offer comfort and support

Somalia:

  • Establish a one-stop center in Qardho, Somalia, within the premises of a health facility
  • Provide medical, legal, and psychosocial counseling services to gender-based violence (GBV) survivors
  • Conduct awareness campaigns and training for hospital staff members who will be selected for GBV service provision
  • Advocate for the treated GBV survivors to receive further assistance
  • Improve the referral system by engaging with other GBV service providers in the region, along with major hospitals
  • Employ staff with appropriate skills and required knowledge
  • Coordinate project activities with stakeholders and relevant clusters.

* According to the National Domestic Violence Hotline (https://www.thehotline.org/resources/statistics/),  one in three women in the USA is, has been, or will be a victim of domestic violence.
** According to the Peaceful Families & Project Sakinah 2011 DV Survey (https://www.peacefulfamilies.org/about-domestic-violence.html), 53% of American Muslims experience some form of domestic violence – which may include emotional, verbal, financial, physical or sexual abuse.

The Role of the Imams & Community in Domestic Violence Response

Assalam Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatahu

All praises are due to Allah — we thank Him, we praise Him, and we glorify Him.

This is your brother Khalid Latif.

On Wednesday, Sept. 30, I will be partnering with Muslim Aid USA to present a webinar focused on domestic violence response, alongside Nabah Ikram of Pillars of Peace. I’ll be sharing with you the role of community members, as well as the role of Imams, when it comes to the ideal response to domestic violence and interacting with both victims and survivors. Sr. Nabah will be discussing the mission of Pillars of Peace, our trauma-informed organization that cultivates an atmosphere of support towards survivors of gender-based violence.

Join me tonight!
