Hot Iftar meals for Orphans in the Gaza Strip

The humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to be complex and from last years bombings and escalations it has contributed to severe degradation of infrastructure leading to access to basic services and deplorable living conditions. With limited access to resources, lack of livelihoods and economic opportunities and continuing insecurity, Gaza residents are trapped in a cycle of rising poverty and deteriorating food security. 

Negative coping mechanisms have been aggravated by the recurrent escalation in conflicts, COVID-19 and the current global rise in basic food prices which exacerbating pre-existing vulnerabilities.

Within this context, orphans are at a significant disadvantage. With levels of poverty rising among the orphaned households in Gaza, they experience a complex set of vulnerabilities, leaving them deprived and endangered. Widowed mothers bear the responsibility alone for meeting basic humanitarian needs of their families, commonly, without a standing source of income. Many are in abject poverty deprived of even the basic necessities of life: dignified and sustainable access to food and nutrition, acceptable living conditions, psychosocial resources critical to development and health, legal and social protection, educational resources, adequate income, and affordable health care. As a result, adequate nutrition is financially unaffordable for most of them.

What is Islamic Relief doing in Gaza?

We have a longstanding presence in Gaza supporting vulnerable communities. We're focusing on priority health needs, namely the provision of medical supplies, food for patients and medical staff. During Ramadan, Islamic Relief is working hard to make sure your donations get to those who need them most. Despite the pandemic, we are still working in over 30 countries just like we have been with every major disaster since 1984. 

This project will address the immediate nutritious needs to orphaned children and their families during the Holy month of Ramadan by providing hot nutritious iftar meals, bringing hope support and dignity to people in need. 

The project will specifically implement:

• 6 Iftar Dinner Gatherings for 900 orphaned families across the different regions in the Gaza Strip. Islamic Relief will provide the venue, organise the logistics and lead on activities for the families. Each family will also receive a valuable gift along with their hot meals.
• 1,100 orphaned families will be provided with hot nutritious meals to break their fast throughout Ramadan. The catered meals will include nutritious, quality food to the families to provide their members enough nutrients and energy, and also lift a huge burden off the shoulders of widowed mothers.
