After the eye exam my left eye had cancer treatment. After surgery, I needed a new right eye.

Retinoblastoma is a childhood eye cancer.

What would you do if you took a baby picture and saw a bright white glow?

What if your Pediatrician said, "Don't worry about it?"

Or your child's doctor said he's never given a diagnosis for Retinoblastoma?

After your child's eye is surgically removed, then what?  Early detection and a dilated eye exam saved our child's vision and her life.

Children under age 5, need to have eye exams for early detection of Rb

My husband and I learned about Retinoblastoma (Rb) eye cancer when our daughter was 9 months old. Mom took a picture and saw a bright white glow in her eyes. Emergency surgery was scheduled to remove her eye because the tumors were growing and spreading. We returned to the hospital every 3 weeks for follow up care. Four years later, our child was diagnosed with hearing loss. Technology has advanced for early detection, families have more treatment options. Currently, there is no prevention and there is no cure.

Our family designed Rb Awareness Posters, for our daughter and children around the world.

More Doctors and Parents need to know, children under 5 years need to be dilated eye exams to detect Retinoblastoma. Rb is a rare childhood eye cancer. From the day of diagnosis, for the rest of a child's life they are at risk for:

Ø     Undetected tumors spread to other parts of the body

Ø     The possibility of developing second cancers exists.

Ø     Surgical removal of one or both eyes, low vision, or monocular vision, requires a new eye,  "called a prosthesis."

Ø     Blindness and hearing loss

Our Goal: Print and Distribute Rb Posters

September is National Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. We are printing Rb Awareness posters to give to parents of children with Retinoblastoma, State Departments of Health (southeast region of U.S.), pediatricians, national cancer organizations, rural community health centers and schools. We will also print and distribute posters to international organizations and vision services agencies.

We are giving posters to every donor in the U.S. and abroad.

Donations help print, mail and translate this important message into Braille, Arabic, French, Spanish and other languages.

Celebrate All Childhood Cancer Survivors

and mourn the children who have not survived.

  • Brittany Howard, Singer-Songwriter of Alabama Shakes, survived but lost her sister to Rb
  • Tatum Fisher, daughter of Derek Fisher, NBA star, was diagnosed with Rb and strives in good health
  • Zaakirah Nayyar Demba, Childhood Rb Cancer Survivor, Photographer, Poster Designer

Childhood Cancer kills more children than any other disease in the United States today, yet treatments designed for a child’s body remain frustratingly out-of-touch.”

In 2000, I saw a poster about Rb Awareness. As I learned more about Rb, I added information to our agency training resources for parents of young children. I met Zaakirah Nayyar at her middle school through my work. I was impressed by her natural creativity, intelligence and technical skills.“

"At nine months old, I was diagnosed with non-hereditary sporadic bilateral retinoblastoma. My right eye was surgically removed, since then I have had monocular vision. I experienced hearing loss after radiation therapy, cancer treatment. Many young children experience post-traumatic stress later in life, from having this surgical procedure at such a young age. It took a long time for me to feel good about being a Rb survivor  and thinking about it as a positive thing because it's really difficult having hearing and vision loss from a rare eye cancer."'
