Storytelling connects Muslims of all races and people of color of all faiths. During this difficult time as we witness what is happening in Sudan, Congo, Haiti, and Palestine, we need to uplift our stories. Your support will help us provide a platform for emerging storytellers, filmmakers, and artists from diverse backgrounds, and showcase their groundbreaking work.

Storytelling to Counter Narratives

BMGFly was founded to counter the erasure of Black and Muslim identities in media, and to empower the storytellers, filmmakers, and artists creating authentic projects to do so. We work to create a platform where we as diverse creatives can create community, develop our craft, and inspire the next generation. The Annenberg Inclusion Initiative released its first-ever study on Muslim representation, and the research showed that Muslim characters were erased in popular movies, that portrayals lack intersectional inclusion, and that Muslims still face stereotyping on screen. We face a surge of Islamophobia and the further dehumanization of Muslims since October 7th, and now more than ever it’s vital to counter harmful narratives. It is also important for us to provide a space where Muslims can work with one another, and with other marginalized communities, to build stronger narratives. To make lasting change, we need to build spaces where we can create better stories.

Allah tells us in The Qur’an, “Oh mankind! We have created you from a male and a female, and made you into nations and tribes, so that you may know one another. Verily, the most honorable of you with Allâh is that who has At-Taqwâ. Indeed, Allâh is All-Knowing, All-Aware.” Surah Al-Hujurat, 49:13 We are to know one another through sharing our diverse stories. This is our driving force. This is our goal.

Leading up to the BMGFly Film Festival, we are organizing screenwriting fellowships, panel events, screenings, and workshops, along with our guided journals and empowerment programs. 

Where your support goes:

• $10 will gift a fellow with a Planner & Self-care Workbook.
• $25 supports our weekly Motivational and Uplifting online content.
• $50 supports our ongoing online Workshops and Programming.
• $100 can provide a scholarship for the cost of our online Self-Empowerment Programs.

About BMGFly

Founded in 2018, BMGFly was started with the purpose of providing opportunities, resources, and fellowship to Black and Muslim girls and women. This year, one of our many goals is to continue our annual BMGFly Film Festival*, and provide consistent education, training, programming, and fellowships for storytellers and filmmakers throughout the year. In the past, we've conducted screenwriting workshops, filmmaking fellowships, and other events, and we'd like to continue doing so! This year, we also have an online empowerment program added, planned screenings and events centering our stories, and much more planned for 2024. Help us fund these endeavors and spread the word!
