Who are we?

The Evergreen Foundation is a UK registered charity focused on child poverty in Kashmir. It is run by a small team of well-educated and dedicated volunteers who are committed to humanitarian work in Kashmir and have much expertise and experience in the field. The project lead is studying a PhD in child poverty in Pakistan and will be leading all logistical aspects of the project both in the UK and Pakistan. The Evergreen Foundation has first-hand seen the extent of child poverty in Kashmir and the adverse effects it has on the children and families involved. Thus, the orphanage project aims to house and home street children, provide a world class education and give them the opportunity for a better life.

Although there are no official statistics available, conservative estimates suggest that Pakistan is home to at least 4 million orphans. With the increase of incidents such as Floods, Earthquakes and Terrorism; the number of orphans without food, shelter and protection is increasing. Thus, there is an urgency for both the government and people to act and tackle this problem. Azad Kashmir has an agrarian economy which is confronted with substantial challenges of poverty, health facilities and education.

What are we doing?

Building an orphanage to house and educate children in the Kashmir region of Kotli. This orphanage will :
- Provide orphans with safety and security 
- Educate the girls all the way through higher education
- Support the girls in attaining jobs  to become independent and self sufficient women.  

Orphans will be sourced from the most destitute of areas and in particular children living on the street. The project will consist of a number of phases and is aiming to be complete in a period of 5 years as it is estimated to cost around £100,000. 

The orphanage will consist of living quarters for the children and all basic amenities. There will also be two rooms for live in female employees who will ensure the girls safety and security and ensure their needs are always met. The orphanage will consist of bedrooms, bathrooms, study rooms, play area, kitchen, dining room and common room. Finally, the roof will be guarded off with high panels to ensure the privacy of the children and give them an open space to use at their leisure. The main objective is to provide the children with a safe, private and open space where they can feel at home and have their needs and requirements met.

Project Plan

Phases

Phase 1

The land purchase is one of the most cruical aspects of the project as the location of the orphanage is key in assuring the safety and security of the orphans. Multiple trips have been made to Pakistan in order to search for land and to ensure it is the best place to build an orphanage.

We have now purchased land in an area of Kotli which is in close proximity to a hospital, shops, police station and other services. It also has access to running water and drainage which can be an issue in cities such as Kotli and is in a family neighbourhood with road access from both sides. It is an ideal plot of land which will allow the construction of a safe and secure orphanage and have the potential to be a thriving community hub and centre.

Phase 2

We are now in the construction phase. The orphanage will be designed to ensure the children have a safe and secure place they can call home. It will have living quarters with bedrooms and bathrooms alongside studies, play areas, garden, prayer area, kitchen and living quarters for employees.

Phase 3

The orphanage will aim to home 20-40 orphan girls to begin with. The orphans will be sourced from the poorest parts of Pakistan and in particular orphans living on the streets. Research for this is underway and we are working with multiple agencies in order to understand the demographics of street children and exactly where the children will come from.
