Most Rohingyas depend on firewood to cook food. But collecting firewood is dangerous and full of challenges. There is no more firewood available near the camps and many Rohingyas, specially women, children, elderly, sick, disabled, or injured from Burmese military abuses are unable to collect firewood.

There is also the possibility of getting kidnapped by human traffickers when going to the forest to collect firewood.

Some refugees, particularly children, have simply never returned from the forest after leaving the camp in search of firewood.

Enable Rohingya refugees that are living in camps in Bangladesh to cook their food by providing them a gas stove.

Since arriving in the camps, refugees had to cut down all the trees, bushes and everything else to erect their shelters. They flattened the hill-slope to put up huts. They have used up all the trees, bush, roots and even leaves for cooking. There is nothing left for them to use for cooking-fuel. Some NGOs have provided gas tank and stove to some refugees, but there are hundreds of thousands still struggling with cooking issues.

As it stands now, gas-tank and stove is the only solution to their cooking-fuel need until another viable solution is found. Soon, the monsoon will be hitting the region and it will create an absolute chaos for the refugees. Even if they get hold of food items, they won’t be able to cook.

Who are the Rohingyas?

Rohingyas are indigenous people of Arakan (Rakhaine state) from the western part of Myanmar (Burma). They have been driven out from their homeland by a genocidal army. They are stateless, that is, they don't have legal rights to live in any place in the entire world! Their citizenship has been taken away from them by the Myanmar government. In the face of indiscriminate killing, burning, rape, and torture, they fled to neighboring Bangladesh where they are staying in camps for months and years with no end in sight.

Why help with Gas-tank and Stove?

Cooking has become a major crisis for refugees. Until a viable solution is found, gas-tank and stove is only solution available to ease the crisis. It is the responsibility of all of us around the world to bring a little bit of ease in their suffering. Even if they receive food, they won’t be able to consume them unless the food is already cooked or it is some type of ready made food that doesn’t require cooking.
