Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness and vision loss in Africa. 1.2% of the entire population of Africa is blind, and cataracts cause 36% of this blindness. More than 75% of all blindness is avoidable.

Africa Relief is organizing a series of medical missions to perform 2,000 cataract surgeries in Mozambique before the end of the year. We need your help to share the gift of sight.

A cataract is a cloudy area in the lens of your eye and is very common as you get older. Over time, cataracts can make your vision blurry, hazy, or less colorful. 

Almost 90% of the world's blind live in low-income countries and the main cause of this often needless and frequently avoidable blindness is cataracts. Sadly, blindness and poverty are both a cause and consequences of each other.

The proportion of blindness due to cataract among all eye diseases ranges from 5% in western Europe, North America, and the more affluent countries in the Western Pacific Region to 50% or more in poorer regions.

The cost per eye is $100 and per patient is $200, as most patients are bilaterally blind.
