Bring to Life the Story of Democracy in America’s First Muslim Majority Town

The Story

At a time when Islamophobic attacks have tripled in the wake of Trump’s election, Hamtramck, USA offers an honest glimpse into the role of Muslims in the American political landscape. With your support, we can bring this story to life!

The Town

When the 2016 election results shocked the nation, many were left looking for answers. We were no exception, turning our eyes to the state that was at the center of the shockwaves, Michigan. Within this state is a uniquely American city, Hamtramck.

After spending time observing the benefits and complexities of multiculturalism in Hamtramck’s social and political spaces, we knew we had to make our first documentary about this city. Therefore, we were called to documentary filmmaking by the very nature of the story of Hamtramck.

In order to complete this film and share it around the globe, we need your support!

The Filmmakers

Razi Jafri is a Detroit-based documentary producer, photographer and filmmaker whose work focuses on ethnicity, religion, culture, immigration, democracy, and the changing urban landscape in America. Razi's work has been featured in the Detroit Free Press and Michigan Radio. He was previously a fellow in the Documenting Detroit Fellowship in documentary photography and photojournalism. Most recently he was named a member of the New York Foundation for the Arts Immigrants Artists (NYFA) Fellowship Program.

Justin Feltman is a documentary producer and filmmaker.  He has worked on several independent films, such as I Am I and Struck by Lightning, as well as several documentaries, Napa Valley Dreams and CHECK IT. He has produced several short films, music videos, and promotional videos for small businesses and nonprofits.  Justin is also interested in photojournalism and had work featured in Huffington Post.

As we are beginning to edit the film, we have already garnered support. Organizations such as The Center for Asian American Media (CAAM) and The Islamic Scholarship Fund (ISF) awarded grants to our film. Furthermore, we have shown clips at the Detroit Free Press Film Festival and a conference at the University of Michigan on immigration.

The Process

We followed the election starting in March 2017 until the inauguration of the new elected officials in January of 2018. We continue to follow the candidates and other figures sparingly but have essentially wrapped shooting principal photography. We expect to complete a rough cut in early 2019. We will test the film, take notes, and hopefully have a final cut by the Summer of 2019. From there, we will finish scoring, color correction, and other final touches and begin submitting for festivals and presenting a 1 hour version to the Center for Asian American Media (CAAM) for broadcast on PBS.
