Join us to start a small business fund to support locals in Zanzibar. Let us uplift one soul at a time!

The Kanga Project was founded in 2016. Our vision is to empower locals by gifting joy and elevating them through visual media. Our latest initiative goes the extra mile by focusing on a selection of existing businesses and supporting them with resources, mentorship and international recognition. We aspire towards seeing small businesses in Zanzibar flourish so they can continue creating, trading and providing for their families and communities on a long term sustainable basis.

WHO will we support?

The Kanga Project Small Business Fund works with individuals and supports their entrepreneurial needs. We want to help maintain passion projects and honest business, by providing necessary resources to those impacted by the current covid crisis. The Kanga Project has a special emphasis on craftsmen and women who maintain the Zanzibari culture and heritage through their work.

Our Network of locals include:

The Craftsmen of Stonetown

The Weaving Women of Cheju

The Culture Retaining Artists

The Next Generation of Artisans

WHAT have we done so far?

The Kanga Project hosted The Zanzibar Women's Retreat in 2018, which actively engaged with small businesses and communities. We supported a network of people by utilising their services, visually depicting their stories and buying their products. Due to the current climate, the retreat is on hold; unfortunately, this means there is also a halt in the exchange of business with the people we had made a connection with. The Kanga Project Small Business Fund will accommodate and support the network, and further extend the support once we have the opportunity to host more retreats in the future.

HOW will it support?

  1. Set up co-working spaces and pay rent so craftsmen can return back to work in the historical stone town
  2. Purchase materials, and sponsor local youth to attend workshops hosted by artisans to help retain the heritage knowledge for the next generation
  3. Use funds to host workshops and exhibitions in locally owned spaces further extending the support network
  4. Provide access to training for women to learn vital creative skills to be self sufficient
  5. Engage locals with mentorship and support from a personal level

Your support is imperative to keep both the heritage and economy of Zanzibar afloat. We recognise the power of small change and are aspiring towards helping one soul at a time! All funds raised will go towards purchasing resources and materials for individuals. No two businesses are the same, therefore every one impacted by The Kanga Project Small Business Fund will be taken care of compassionately with attention to devise creative long term solutions to keep them running.

We absolutely rely on your kindness and support to fulfil these intentions! Please share directly with your loved ones and ask for them to report back so you can track your progress! Use the social links on the page to make it easier for yourself. Know that you will reap the reward of every good you initiate! Thank you truly for sharing this journey with us! A million and one THANK YOUS!

Dear Kindest Soul who's joined this journey,

We've had an incredible response over the past 48 hours since launching. At almost 5k, it is inspirational seeing the collective efforts of YOU! 😭Every single donation counts towards turning huge dreams into a tangible reality. Thank you truly for sharing this vision and mission to enable the people of Zanzibar to continue earning sustainably and celebrate their rich culture and heritage through their work!

We've uploaded a brand new video explaining the journey of the entire Kanga Project so far which you can enjoy here! With a special feature of the beautiful voices of the children of Tumbatu School emphasising how only +1 gets you to the next number. Get your tissues ready because it's quite the tearjerker! ( I mean those happy tears are sure to creep out; hayfever anyone? 😭😄)

A million thank yous for being here. I pray we continue the movement of goodness and do our part to help elevate one soul at a time!

Your #kangamovement advocate,

-Muna
