Our London family, like many other immigrant families, moved to Canada for a better life. They moved here in 2007 with hopes and dreams for their kids, and integrated themselves into Canadian society seamlessly. They became active members of the London, Ontario community and flourished in their respective careers. 

Honoring Our London Family

Madiha, a 44 year old devoted mom of 2, was working to complete a PhD in civil engineering.

Salman, a 46 year old devoted father and a physiotherapist, provided love and care for seniors living in numerous care homes. 

Yumna was 15 years old, ready to start 10th grade and meet her friends in person after years of virtual learning. She had many dreams and aspirations to fulfill as she continued her secondary education. 

The young boy was 9 years old at the time of the incident and was described to be a shy third grade student. He was adored by his parents, grandmother and elder sister. Today he is the lone survivor of Our London Family. 

Talat, 74, was the mother of Salman. She was a loving mother, wife, mother-in-law, and grandmother, who also perished in this attack. 

We honor their beautiful legacy and remember the family for what they were: soft, kind hearted members of society who were perished in a heartless attack of terrorism and Islamophobia In London, Ontario on June 6, 2021.

About the attack

On the evening of June 6, 2021, a father, mother, daughter, son and grandmother were out for their daily evening walk. In a horrific targeted attack, most of the family was killed and left behind a 9 year old boy who sustained life threatening injuries. The young boy survived, becoming an orphan and the sole surviving member of the family. 

The London attack will stay in the lives of all Canadians with a heavy heart for generations to come. It is a jarring reminder of the persisting existence of Islamophobia in Canada. Muslims in Canada have been victims to Islamophobia one too many times, and this attack in London solidifies the fact that Canada has so much more left to do to combat Islamophobia.

Cause

Yumna was the young 15 year old daughter who tragically lost her life alongside her parents and grandmother. She was an incredibly talented artist and avid painter. 

Her friends described her as a thoughtful and kind friend. “She would just compliment you and she would notice your insecurities and purposely direct the compliments at that,” Yumna’s friend, Hateem Amin said. 

In 2020, Yumna had graduated from the London Islamic School where she had painted a floor-to-ceiling mural before she left. The mural features an image of the Earth floating in space with the headline of, “Learn. Lead. Inspire.” The mural also includes a quote by Les Brown, “Shoot for the moon. Even if you miss it you will land among the stars.”
