NOW, in 2016, Al-Qalam Academy is preparing to compete in DC MIST after an almost 5-year hiatus! Help them re-launch strong!
The Al-Qalam Academy MIST Team is in need of funds to cover various expenses, listed further below.
According to DC MIST’s website, “MIST is a fun, educational, interactive program of competitions and workshops geared towards bringing high school students together from around the nation to develop leadership, communication, and other creative skills in order to develop a strong identity.”
High school MSAs from around the region as well as Islamic school students come together to participate in MIST for one weekend. During this weekend, students compete in various competitions such as Islamic jeopardy, math Olympics, arts and photography, writing and speech, Qur’an memorization and more. They also attend workshops by local Imams and community leaders on various topics such as personal development, social activism, and community service.
The Al-Qalam MIST team needs funds for the following expenses:
Here is a rough timeline of our plan for the following months:
Jan-Feb 2016: Recruiting MIST team members and completing registration.
Feb-Mar 2016: Preparing for individual and group competitions, arranging lodging and transportation, buying team T-shirts and supplies for competitions, etc.
April 1-3, 2016: DC MIST Tournament weekend!
MIST is a program that allows students to:
Utilize their talents and abilities beyond regular school work
Take up challenges that they might not have otherwise
Gain experience in various fields that might serve as future endeavors and career choices, such as writing and publishing, graphic design, Islamic fashion design, Qur’an memorization, film studies, business, research, and more.
Participate in a variety extracurricular activities that will enhance their high school experience
Build life skills such as communication and cooperation

Al-Qalam MIST Team Success!
Assalamu alaikum warahmatullah,
The Al-Qalam Academy MIST Team performed brilliantly at the DC MIST Tournament that took place at George Washington University on the weekend of April 1st-3rd, 2016!
The students competed in a variety of competitions, attended workshops, and made friends with new people. It was a great opportunity for them to merge into the greater Muslim community around them.
Our students won 1st Place in Short Film, alhamdulillah, and another student won 2nd Place for Photography.
Our students really enjoyed their time at MIST and they look forward to future learning opportunities next year and the ones following. All of this success would not have been possible without Allah's Help and then YOUR generous efforts! We thank you from the bottom of our hearts and it is generous donors like you who help us to enrich the experiences of Muslim students!
