INTRODUCTION

Over the last 14 years, Masjid Taqwa (MT) has grown to become an integral part of the cultural and religious setting of the multicultural community in the South Bronx. Located at the corner of Home Street and Southern Blv in the Hunts Point area of the South Bronx, the Masjid occupies a rented 1st-floor space as part of a three-story building currently shared by two churches (one in the basement and the other on the 2^nd floor).

Over the years, MT has grown organically to such extent that demands for adequate prayers facilities, education, and community support services that cannot be met due to lack of physical space in the current premise. Masjid Taqwa’s capacity and infrastructure have now reached a critical point where the development of the site with a modern purpose designed premise is only the way of sustaining current levels of growth and ensuring the introduction of vital new services so desperately needed by the community.

For years, MT’s members and its leadership committee have been collectively raising funds and scouting for affordable properties that can be bought and transformed into a facility that properly ascertain the needs of the community. After many years of searching, the community has been blessed with an opportunity to buy a property within the desired radius. Fortunately, this property that was once a Church became available for PURCHASING PRICE OF $950,000. Through the generous donations of the Muslim community over the years and non-interest loans by members, we were able to purchase the property with a down payment of $500,000 with the agreement to pay the remaining balance to the generous seller in installments with no interest involved. ALHAMDULILLAH!!!!

The property has great potential for a purpose designed Masjid and a community center to accommodate and adequately provide services for the growing community.

Masjid Taqwa is appealing to you, the donor community, for support in raising the targeted sum of $1,000,000.

Say: "Truly, my Lord enlarges the provision for whom He wills of His slaves, and (also) restricts (it) for him, and whatsoever you spend of anything (in Allâh's Cause), He will replace it. And He is the best of providers." (Translated interpretation of Saba’ 34:39)

And spend (in charity) of that with which We have provided you, before death comes to one of you and he says: "My Lord! If only You would give me respite for a little while, then I should give Sadaqah (i.e. Zakât) of my wealth, and be among the righteous. (Translated interpretation of Al-Munafiqun 63:10)

Currently, the Masjid Taqwa is situated in a working class area with a growing Muslim population.

COST AND FUNDING

• PURCHASE PRICE OF NEW MASJID = $950,000
• CLOSING COST AND ESTIMATED COST OF RENOVATION = $300,000
• TOTAL COST = $950,000 + $300,000 = $1,250,000

• CURRENT DOWN PAYMENT = $500,000

  • FROM NON-INTEREST LOAN FROM MEMBERS = $250,000

• REMAINING BALANCE NEEDED = $1,250,000 -- $500,000 = $750,000

• TARGET FUNDRAISING SUM = $750,000 + $250,000 = $1000,000

NEW LOCATION

The acquired new property encompasses two buildings and a large backyard allocated on a 5,000 SF. One building was the St Luke’s Evangelical church of 200+ congregation plus 1 family detached 4-bedroom parsonage equipped with 1st-floor Meeting Hall! 75 x 100 lot Zone to renovate!!  The property is a true Genuine Landmark step away from the Morris Park, Bronx Zoo, and ALL MAJOR TRANSPORTATION (TRAIN 2, 5 ; BX21 BXM10, BX40, BX42) TO NYC!

The proposed new premises plan envisions:

• Priority space on the ground floor area for worship which could interchangeably serve as conference areas

• Segregated Children’s Education area to ensure safety and uninterrupted studies

• Enlarged separated space of worship for women and their accompanying children

• Separated toilet and wudhu facilities

• Space for separate library and kitchen

• Outside space is a near four-fold increase the worship area compare to the current premises.

• When the weather is good, it can be used for recreational activities

• It offers great flexibility, as it can be adapted for multiple usages including containment of the large crowd of Eid and Friday prayers, and Islamic events.

GOALS AND MISSION STATEMENT

• To provide Muslim communities around the South Bronx Area with a place for worship adhering to the understanding of the Qur’an and Sunnah as understood by earliest generations of Muslims.

• To form an integrated community, catering for all religious, educational and communal support needs.

• To engage with the non-Muslim community and civic bodies by proving an informed and accurate insight into the correct teachings of Islam, so often misunderstood, free from distortions and extremisms.

• To facilitate the spiritual growth of the community along with a special focus on establishing an immersive Islamic environment for the youth. To strive for them to fall under the statement of our Messenger: “Allah will give seven people his shade on the day of resurrection when there would be no shade but his shade” and mentioned among the seven is, “...a person whose heart is attached to the mosque…”
