The activist who was known for his dedication to Palestine and fighting against police brutality has passed away at 31 years old.
According to reports, Bassem was found unresponsive on a bus in Bridgeton, Missouri on Tuesday, November 27th. He was later pronounced dead of a heart attack.
Bassem dedicated his life and his work for Palestine. He was also known for live streaming and documenting the protests in Ferguson and beyond. He worked hard to unite the struggles of Black people in America with the struggles of Palestinians under occupation.
A family member in speaking about him: "In his short life, he did as much if not more to unite the fight for black liberation and Palestinian liberation”
Bassem had been planning on running for state representative for Missouri in the 2020 elections.
"When I win the seat in the Missouri house in 2020 better get ready for my unfiltered candidness. Because I wont let any lobby influence me & I’m going to work hard on police reform, going after big pharma for creating this opioid crisis as well as getting those addicted people help."
Bassem wanted to go to Washington DC to fight against injustice. He might not be able to go anymore, but there are others that are ready to carry on his legacy.
American Muslims for Palestine - Missouri is launching this campaign to start the Bassem Masri Memorial fund for Justice. This fund will advance the just cause of Palestine by sending a delegation in Bassem's honor to advocate for Palestine as part of Palestine Advocacy Day. Bassem had been planning to attend the annual event in which delegates from all over the country meet with their elected officials in DC to advocate on behalf of the Palestinian cause. And, because Bassem was equally passionate about black liberation, the fund will contribute to HandsUp United, an organization Bassem personally worked with whose vital work is to combat state-sanctioned violence against people of color.
