HOPE USA is raising money to provide impoverished school children in Pakistan a new traditional outfit for the Islamic holiday of EID.

Summary:

HOPE plans to celebrate the spirit of giving during Ramadan through an Eid Clothes Campaign for students in our formal and informal schools in Pakistan. The children who attend these schools come from impoverished backgrounds (sons and daughter of laborers, farmers, domestic helpers) and attend HOPE schools for free. We are raising money to gift them with a new traditional outfit on Eid so that they have something special for themselves this year.

Challenge:

In a country where 60 percent of youth are illiterate, and only 1 in 3 women can read and write, the children in NGO HOPE's schools are working extremely hard to beat the odds. The almost 10,000 students who attend HOPE's formal and home schools in Pakistan come from backgrounds of extreme poverty. They are used to sacrificing even the basics such as a meal, clean water, and proper housing. We wanted to gift them with something extra special on this holiday of EID, a beautiful new outfit.

Solution:

HOPE plans to purchase new EID shalwar kameez (traditional Pakistani tunic and pants) outfits for students in their formal and informal school system. These outfits will be hand-delivered to the students in time for EID. HOPE's founder, Dr. Mubina Agboatwalla reports that she sees the children wearing their Eid outfits during various school ceremonies throughout the year. The children are genuinely happy to receive these outfits and put them to multiple good uses.

Long Term Impact:

For these children, a rare new outfit means much more to them than just clothes - in essence, this small gesture makes them feel like a worthy human being. A new set of clothes can uplift the morale of children who are living at poverty levels and are accustomed to sacrificing even the basics such as a meal. These intangibles are what make us all human, putting a smile on someone's face and giving them him/her the respect and dignity they deserve.

History of HOPE:

Health Oriented Preventive Education (HOPE) was the inspiration of Dr. Mubina Agboatwalla, a pediatrician by profession who helped eradicate polio from Pakistan in the early stages of her career.  Due to Dr. Mubina's medical background, HOPE's initial objective was to provide the poor with better access to medical centers and hospitals.  In a country grappling with basic issues such as lack of access to clean drinking water, poor maternal and infant health, malnutrition in children, prevention and treatment of diseases such as malaria, cholera, and tuberculosis, it already seemed as though HOPE had enough of a challenge on its hands. But soon Dr. Mubina realized that the cornerstone of a productive and forward-thinking community relies on both a healthy body and healthy mind. She honed her vision to an integrative approach that was twofold: health and education.

As a single woman in a male-dominated country, Dr. Mubina faced many challenges and setbacks; it was through perseverance and hard work that HOPE grew from a dream to a reality. Today, HOPE has a countrywide presence throughout Pakistan which includes hospitals, formal schools, informal schools, vocational centers, basic health clinics, mobile health clinics, and maternal health clinics, all which provide free or minimal-cost healthcare and education. Additionally, HOPE has been active in disaster relief efforts throughout Pakistan. We are humbled to say that we have grown to a network of hospitals and schools that treats 500,000 patients and educates 10,000 students per year, mostly women and children.

See Your LaunchGood Donations at Work!

Salaams, Peace, and Hello to our Friends around the World,

We at HOPE USA wanted to THANK YOU from the bottom of our hearts for your overwhelming support of our Iftar and Eid Clothes campaigns.  With your help we have reached fundraising levels of $7,949 for iftars and $6,756 for Eid clothes.  That is enough to feed almost 4,000 impoverished children and provide new Eid clothes for 675 children who rarely ever get new clothes!

The picture above is from about three days ago, a happy girl receiving a new Eid outfit in Thatta, Pakistan.

A special thank you to my campaign coach, Mariam El-Khatib for stepping up to the plate to help out a stranger.  :)  She works at LaunchGood but she really went the extra mile to help us get the most out of fundraising this month.  Thank you, Mariam!

We are still collecting for both campaigns until midnight tonight if you would still like to donate:
