A Crowdfunding Campaign to Heal an Orphan’s Troubled Past

Nemat is 13-year-old boy who lives in an orphanage in Kabul, Afghanistan. Each of his ten fingers were systematically fractured or broken by his stepmother over five years of abuse. Now in safety, surgery is necessary to heal his digits and to become part of his road towards becoming whole again and moving beyond his troubled past.

Every orphan child is our collective responsibility. This Ramadan this crowdfunding campaign seeks to make this boy whole again.

Why This Matters

At his tender age, Nemat has a story wrapped in suffering, grief, and trauma.

His mother died when he was two. His father re-married and shortly afterwards left Afghanistan – never to be heard from again. His stepmother took over his care. She was abusive and beat Nemat regularly. The abuse included lashing him over the head with a stick. Over years of abuse, she had systematically fractured or broke each of his ten fingers.

One day, aft
er a particularly bad beating, his stepmother put him out of the home. Nemat was nine. He became a street urchin. He found work at a mechanic’s shop doing odd jobs and washing cars. The owner of that shop provided Nemat with room and board along with one meal a day. After a little more than a year there, Nemat ran away. A police officer found him sleeping in a ditch.

The local authorities in his village in Daykundi turned his care over to Afghanistan’s Department of Education, which subsequently made him a permanent ward of an orphanage in Kabul that is operated by the U.S.-based Orphan House Foundation.

Nemat arrived at the orphanage in 2012. He was in bad shape. He could not read or write, hold a utensil to eat, and suffered from a broken spirit. With much care and love, Nemat has made amazing strides; he recently placed in the academic top-three in his class. This surgery is part of his road towards becoming whole again and moving beyond his troubled past.

The Operation

Through five years of abuse, the joints in Nemat’s fingers had fractured and healed on multiple occasions. The healing happened without medical intervention. As a result, his fingers acquired an awkward positioning that made use of his digits difficult and sometimes painful. He had trouble performing basic daily tasks like brushing his teeth and holding an utensil to eat.

Shortly after his arrival at the orphanage in 2012, Orphan House Foundation paid for basic surgery on his right hand so he could regain proper use of one hand. Three years later, Nemat now needs that same operation on his left hand. That surgery will be coupled with an extended regimen of physical rehabilitation on both hands to ensure his digits fully heal so that his injuries do not become a hindrance or a disability later in life. His medical care in Afghanistan is overseen by Dr. Kadeer Halimi, who is an Emergency Room physician in Fremont, California and founder of
Orphan House Foundation.

Nemat aspires to one day become a police officer or join the Afghan National Army. He currently attends a private school and lives at the orphanage with 22 other orphan boys.

An Islamic Mandate to Help Orphans

We are inspired by Prophetic values to strive to shelter, clothe, care, and “feed orphans from what we eat.” We are also reminded Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was himself an orphan. Our founding principle has been to raise the orphans in our care with the same level of love and compassion as we would rear our own children in the U.S. We are heartened for our own mortal selves and our orphanage's donors and supporters when we read this saying from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him):

"I and the caretaker of the orphan will enter Paradise together like this, raising (by way of illustration) his forefinger and middle finger jointly, leaving no space in between." [Saheeh al-Bukhari]

An orphan is the Muslim Ummah's collective responsibility. Imagine your child needs surgery and you cannot afford it. Each parent knows deep in the recess of his or her heart that they would suffer, scrape, and sacrifice to make that operation happen. Nemat has no father or mother to make those sacrifices for him.

Farida who graduated at the top of her class from the prestigious girl's Afghan-Turk school in Kabul was able to win a scholarship to go to a University in Turkey. We were able to get her a visa and with the grace of God, she is now in Turkey staying at a girl's dormitory at the university. Nehmat's Surgery

Hello everyone....Karim had his first surgery last year, and this year went back to India for his follow up.The doctors told us that one of his rods that were inserted in his back had broken, and that also that top part of his surgical site had failed.  This meant that he would need a second surgery.  Since he was already there, he went through his second successful back surgery and is currently out of the ICU and in rehab.  We also have Nehmat there who went through his hand surgery, and Fahim is scheduled to get his eye exams soon, God willing.  We at Orphan House Foundation want to thank you for your kind donations and ask that you keep them in your prayers.

A Note of Thanks | Bikes For Orphans

As Salaamu Alaykum (Peace be unto you),

Alhmadulliah. The Crowdfunding campaigns for Karim’s back surgery and Nemat’s hand surgery are now fully funded – and then some! Your generous support will empower these young orphans to live more dignified lives. Jazak’Allah Khair!

We will now begin the process to obtain visa entries for both boys so that they can travel with a chaperone to India this November and December during their six-week winter school recess. Orphan House Foundation’s Founder Dr. Kadeer Halimi will coordinate Karim and Nemat’s medical care and rehabilitation.

These young men were counting on us and this overwhelming response has shown them that there is no shortage of love and compassion. Alhamdulliah. Thank you!

We just launched a third Ramadan Crowdfunding campaign to provide ten bicycles for the 23 boys at the orphanage to share. Please consider a contribution:
