Help a public hospital that helps everybody - Karantina hospital is in desperate need of rebuilding and new medical equipment after the Beirut port blast.

Help Rebuild Karantina Hospital

________

A devastating explosion ripped through Beirut on August 4th 2020, killing at least 200 people, injuring nearly 5000 others and leaving 300,000 homeless. The blast wave destroyed the city’s port and caused extensive damage over the rest of the capital, including Karantina General Hospital.

The public hospital is located only 400 meters away from the explosion site and was almost completely ruined. They were forced to evacuate their patients, who are mainly poor Lebanese and marginalized people, such as Palestinian and Syrian refugees, as well as immigrants.

How Can I Help?

_____

The restoration process is well underway, but as you may know, medical equipment is incredibly expensive and large parts of the hospital, including the Pediatric Ward, still need total reconstruction. Over 600 patients go through the hospital every month, so we need to act fast. Any amount can make a difference!

Why Is This Important?

_________

Unfortunately, the aftermath of the explosion has only plunged Lebanon deeper into crisis; the country is already facing an unprecedented economic collapse, political unrest and a global pandemic, while half the population currently lives below the poverty line. Therefore, it is vital to get Karantina hospital up and running again  -not only so they can continue to treat people who can't afford treatment, but also to ease pressure off other hospitals, who are struggling to deal with the rising number of COVID-19 cases.

How Do I Stay Updated?

It's important to remember that amidst all the destruction and chaos, there are real people suffering. This is why we have decided to make matters more personal by collaborating with Lebanese-Danish journalist, Iman Alaouie, who has traveled to Beirut to give you regular updates about the ongoing situation.

She will be sharing people's stories from Beirut, in order to shine light on their firsthand experiences living through this humanitarian crisis. You can follow the hashtag #StoriesfromBeirut on her Twitter and Instagram.
