This campaign will collect all funds raised by February 6, 2018 at 12:45 AM EST
Last January, shortly before the start of the South African academic year, a visibly anxious father unexpectedly popped by at our office. He is a refugee from the Democratic Republic of Congo who runs an informal hair salon in a tent on a sidewalk in Durban, South Africa. His takings here are minimal, and when he can't generate enough of an income to feed his family, he guards cars in parking lots.
Here is a photo of his salon:
This father was frantic as his son, Orlin, was about to commence his second year studies in Mechanical Engineering in a different province. However, he was owing the university a substantial sum of money for tuition fees for the previous year and his future was therefore uncertain.
We embarked on a home visit, and found that the student's parents lived in a tiny one-bedroom flat with four other children, in extreme poverty.
The student himself had borrowed text books the previous year, walked a long distance to and from campus and struggled with nutrition as well.
We helped him fill out a bursary application form, and interviewed him. We then activated numerous appeals and thanks to the generosity of donors, we were able to pay off his debt plus fund his second year studies as well as acquire funding for his text books.
Both him, and his father were extremely happy. Here is the student addressing other students and donors at our annual bursary meet and greet last year.
And here are the outstanding results he produced at the end of the academic year:
The 2018 academic year is about to begin. Orlin will once again need funding for the year. His sister has also just completed high school, and will require assistance too, as will numerous other deserving students of various faith backgrounds that we strive to help.
It isn't possible for us to share every single story with you. However, we can tell you that with the Mercy of the Almighty, through our bursary programme we are making it possible for many young men and women (and even older men and women, as we have assisted individuals on the other side of 30 to study too!) to break the cycle of poverty which thousands of families in South Africa find themselves trapped within.
Word about our programme has spread and we have a thick pile of applications which have come in, making it necessary for us to pursue all possible avenues of fund-raising.

Funds raised from this campaign will be used to fund deserving students (refugees and non-refugees, Muslim and non-Muslim) in one or more of the following ways (depending on their individual needs):
- course/tuition fees
- textbooks and other essentials like equipment, laptops, etc.
- accommodation
- transport to and from campus
- food
- extra tuition
We leave you with the words of Mohammed Sohail, a first-year medical student who will require funding for the second year of his studies:
"I think people should support ILM-SA as they have taken the initiative to put equity back into education, giving the previously financially disabled yet brilliant students of society a fighting chance in the world. They allow potential academic champions to compete and hopefully take their rightful place among the greats.
There isn't a nobler cause."

Crunch time is here
During the past few months you donated to our campaign aimed at assisting deserving South African students to pursue a quality tertiary education.
We thank you for that and want to update you:
1) The South African academic year begins in February 2018
2) Our bursary applications for 2018 closed on the 12th of January 2018
3) Applications have come streaming in from every corner of South Africa, from young men and women with uncertain futures.
4) On Monday our trustees sit around a table perusing these applications, and discussing them.
5) The following Monday we begin interviewing students.
6) And thereafter, we inform them whether we can assist them and to what extent.
Yes, it's crunch time for us, and we need to escalate our fundraising efforts to ensure that we don't need to turn ANY student who deserves assistance away.
Please consider popping by our Launch Good page and donating again. And do share our campaign with your friends and family!
Jazakumullahu khayran in advance.

Look at the results our students have produced
As salaamu alaikum
It is December and for South African students this means it's examination results time. Yes, the academic year begins in January in sha Allah and students have been sending us their results. We are so impressed by what we have seen so far, that we have decided to share them with you. Please have a look at the images below and if you are impressed, please consider making another donation/spreading the word!
Good news - our campaign has been extended by two days!
As salaamu alaikum.
The awesome team at Launch Good have extended our campaign by two days and have also featured us as their charity of the week in their e-news letter.
At this point, with our bursary applications open (the SA academic year starts in January/February 2018), and pleas for assistance pouring in, we are going all out to raise funds. We have even started selling second hand evening gowns to assist our brothers and sisters in need! Yes that's our determined we are to assist as many students as possible.
Please pass our fundraising link on to your friends/share it on social media/ etc. And please let them know that we have just two days left on this beautiful site.

Only 2 Days Left - Please help us reach our target
As salaamu alaikum,
We thank you for making a donation towards our Launch Good campaign which is raising funds for our bursary programme. We have just two days left, and we have not yet met our target. We humbly ask you to:
1) Ask your family and friends to donate,
2) Consider making another donation if your budget allows for it.
South Africa has one of the biggest poverty gaps in the world - i.e. the gap between the rich and the underprivileged is HUGE. Education is undoubtedly a way in which to work towards eradicating poverty, as we have personally witnessed in the lives of former bursary students who are now working, empowering themselves and their families.
However accessing a quality education in South Africa, is challenging as education here is not free, and is unaffordable to the average lower to middle income household.
Please consider making another donation and please do pass the word on.
If you donate before midnight EST on the 28th of November, we stand to win a $1500 prize towards our campaign from Launch Good - we hope you can assist in sha Allah.
