"The Believers, men and women, are protectors of one another" ~ The Holy Quran (9:71)

Help Keep These Families Together

I recently sat with an older woman whose entire life might change in the coming weeks. As she showed me pictures of her family, she looked with worry at me and asked if I could do anything to keep her daughter from being deported. Where she thought that things were getting better for her family given their undocumented status, she now wonders what her daughter's future will be like and if they will be separated from each other. Aside from the harsh reality that her own undocumented status may potentially bring, her only concern is her child and what will come of her.

I've been with refugees in different parts of the world. I've been with people who have lost everything due to war, conflict and natural disaster. As hard as it was for me to hear mothers in those places ask if there was anything I can do to protect their children, some even asking me to take them with me, I now find myself having similar conversations with mothers in the United States. So many families of immigrants, many of whom are Muslim and have already experienced loved ones being ripped away from them due to deportation, are readying themselves for separation due to changes in DACA. What lies ahead for so many of them is uncertain and it is feels that much heavier as they attempts to figure out what the best course of action is when at any moment it might be decided that either they or their loved ones will be rounded up and sent away.

Why it Matters

Moments like these demonstrate our willingness to help others in their time of need. 800,000 immigrant youth are now able to get protection from deportation, go to college, and support their families because of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA).  That's 800,000 lives that have just as much of a right to live as you and I.  It's not because they are a key part of our labor force or that they help build the economy.  That logic makes it still about us.  They have a right to be here simply because they have a right to be here.  Let's make this about about each one of them.

The Project

On September 5, 2017 the Trump Administration announced an end to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. There are 154,000 individuals who qualify to renew their DACA Status before October 5th, 2017. This process is urgent, complicated, and expensive. It means that many young people have to quickly come up with the $495 renewal fee that would have taken months to raise. Our hope is to help 100 young people with this renewal fee.  All proceeds will be going to United We Dream's DACA Renewal Fund and are tax-deductible through their non-profit status.

How You Can Help

Give whatever you can. Whether its 1 dollar, 5 dollars or 5,000, every bit will make a difference.  And please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.  May Allah reward you for your generosity and give you and your loved ones only the best in this world and in the next.  Ameen.

as'salaamu alaykum,

We've raised closed to $615,000 alhamdulillah in our campaign to build an emergency shelter for abused women and children in NYC. On this blessed 27th night of Ramadan as many of us are standing and seeking out Laylatul Qadr, I would ask that you help us reach our goal of $700,000 by making a donation online to our campaign at launchgood.com/nycshelter and share it with everyone you know to ask them to make a contribution as well.

I know that if we all come together and encourage our friends, families, and others to contribute, we'll make it happen inshallah.

Help Needed For Refugees Facing Extreme Suffering, Hunger, and Conflict

Our Islamic Center at NYU has raised more than $400,000 for the Rohingya refugees of Myanmar and I wanted to invite you to be a part of the campaign at launchgood.com/ICNYU4Myanmar and help spread the word on it.

I went to visit the Rohingya refugee camps shortly after they opened the border between Myanmar and Bangladesh last August.  I was able to spend time with so many orphans, widows, and grieving families who witnessed loved one after loved one killed in front of their eyes through the state-sanctioned genocide and ethnic cleansing.  There wasn't one  refugee who could tell me that they hadn't seen loved ones burned alive in front of their eyes. Not one that could tell me that they hadn't seen friends, family, and neighbors shot or slit at the throats. Not one that could tell me that they hadn't been separated from people they know and love. It's arguably the worst humanitarian crisis taking place in the world today.

Contributions are tax-deductible and zakat-eligible.  Please do give what you can at  launchgood.com/ICNYU4Myanmar and keep the Rohingya people in your thoughts and prayers.

Thanks fam. Hope you and your loved ones are well.

- Khalid
