My husband, Muhammad Abdul Latif, has been dedicating his life to teaching Islam, Quran and Arabic for the past 15 years. He was one of only 5 students to graduate from Zaytuna College’s rigorous 4-year pilot seminary program in Islamic Sciences, and then went on to receive his Masters in Philosophy at the Dominican School of Philosophy in Berkeley. For years, he taught in the Muslim community of the San Francisco Bay Area and online, and traveled regularly to the UK to lecture and teach in the Muslim community there. He was an Arabic and Islamic Sciences teacher at Ilm Tree, a successful homeschooling cooperative in the Bay area. He also served as the Imam of Lighthouse Mosque in Oakland for 4 years until he had to resign to focus on his Masters program and his work travels to the UK to teach Islamic Sciences .

For the past two years, he has been at the University of Exeter in the UK, and is about to start the final year of his PhD in Islamic Philosophy. At Exeter, he has already taught several seminars on various topics related to Islam, and successfully passed his PhD qualifying exams in the spring. His dream is to be a professor, so that he can teach a wider audience of university students, and continue teaching in the Muslim community.

We have been married for 21 years with 2 kids, a boy and a girl who are 18 and 19. Supporting him climb the ladder of success in doing God's work over the years, I can vouch for his sincerity and dedication to teaching Islam, mentoring many young Muslims, and improving the spiritual and intellectual capacity of Muslims throughout the world. All the sacrifices made over the years have all been worth it for such a noble cause. It has been a long and tough road, getting an education after having kids and providing for a family at the same time. He is in the last year of reaching his last educational goal and his family cannot wait to see him finish , as the high cost of living in the UK has meant we have had to remain in the US while he has been pursuing his PhD there.

For as long as I’ve known him, he has been dedicated to serving the community through his teaching of Islam, but has been wary of seeking charity from the community in doing so. One of the reasons he has pursued the PhD was to have a stable academic position that would enable him to teach Islamic sciences and spirituality without having to rely on community donations.However, although he has done everything he can to earn a living and seek loans to complete his PhD, he has one more year’s tuition left and has now reached the limit student loans he can take out.

He has not sought community help in finishing his PhD, but out of my own initiative I am hoping that you can see the dedication and sacrifice he has given to the community for so many years, and help him earn the credentials that would enable him to serve for many more years to come.
