In the United States, an average of 20 people experience intimate partner physical violence every minute. This equates to more than 10 million abuse victims annually — THE NATIONAL COALITION AGAINST DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Prior to COVID-19, the CDC reported about 1 in 4 women and 1 in 10 men experienced sexual violence, physical violence and/or stalking by an intimate partner during their lifetime. Due to COVID-19 and mandatory government issued stay-at-home and social distancing orders, experts warned that nation-wide lockdowns would empower perpetrators of domestic violence, leaving survivors trapped in their homes. Unfortunately, the reality is that home is not a safe place for everyone and we are seeing this first hand within our community.
In order to address this dire issue, Pillars of Peace is partnering with the Zakat Fund of NYC and The Islamic Center at NYU to raise funds in order to support survivors of domestic and gender-based violence in this holy month of Ramadan amid a rise in domestic violence cases.
Pillars of Peace hopes to supplement The Zakat Fund of NYC’s resources and provide monetary relief to individuals facing physical, mental, sexual, and fiscal abuse. The funds raised will be allocated to support vulnerable individuals seeking support and safe havens from violent households.
Every dollar you donate will go a long way to help save lives of families and children subjected to abuse. Whether it's helping pay rent, buying food, getting access to healthcare services, or providing the resources needed to ensure safety.
As applications start to come in, the Zakat Fund of NYC will process the checks, so funding will be provided to those in need in real time.
Please feel free to donate directly on our website if you prefer:

Domestic Violence is haraam - clear and simple. Our challenge today is to move beyond simple rhetoric and live our faith. Even if we as individuals are not ourselves committing this vile act of injustice, we are helping perpetuate it by remaining quiet, standing by, and not helping those in need.
We invite those in need of financial assistance to apply for funds at https://zakatfundofnyc.org/pillarsofpeace
Please note that applications will need to fulfill eligibility requirements of the Zakat Fund NYC. Successful applicants will be awarded a grant in a week's time of submitting an application. For any questions, please reach out to info@pillarsofpeace.org.
Pillars of Peace was founded by members of the Islamic Center at NYU community in order to address a gap in appropriate residential services for Muslim survivors of domestic and gender-based violence. While our focus is on the Muslim community, all are welcome.
We aim to create a trauma-informed organization that is based on an empowerment model of services which focus on cultivating an atmosphere of support and encouragement. Our mission and goals are rooted in the Universal Declaration on Human Rights and we will continue to advocate for these basic rights on behalf of survivors of gender-based violence.
Pillars of Peace is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, all contributions are zakat eligible and tax-deductible. [Tax ID: 83-3597054]
