Providing spiritual care, guidance, and education, based on traditional sources of understanding and living Islam, to Muslim students on university campuses

Support Spiritual Care, Guidance, and Education for Muslim University Students.

Starting in 2015 the IOK Chaplaincy Initiative began to offer support to Muslim students at various Southern California campuses. We knew that the college experience is a uniquely challenging opportunity for growth and understanding and that Muslim university students could benefit from qualified spiritual care and support.

What Are We Trying to Do?

Our efforts are focused around providing spiritual care, guidance, and education, based on traditional sources of understanding and living Islam, to Muslim students on university campuses.

We hope to see a region where Muslim chaplains are serving all of the major educational institutions and working to develop and support generations of Muslim young professionals who are well-established in their faith and capable of giving back to their communities and society intellectually, spiritually, and professionally.

How Do We Do It?

Our work revolves around a few major components:

  • Spiritual Care and Guidance: This occurs primarily through regular office hours that are offered by the chaplains on each of the campuses. Office hours are confidential and students are welcomed to come and speak about anything that they would like to discuss.
  • Religious Education: The occurs primarily through regular study circles on the campuses as well as guest lectures and one-off programs.
  • Networking: One of the benefits of chaplains that are well-known in the broader Muslim community is that they are able to connect the students to networks and resources beyond their individual campuses.
  • Mentorship: All of our chaplains are from the region that we serve and have graduated from local universities in addition to their traditional Islamic Studies overseas. This allows them to relate to the students and provide mentorship on different issues that they face in their lives.
  • Advising: The chaplains are available, as desired, to advise the various Muslim-led student organizations and projects on the campuses.

What Makes Our Work Unique?

Muslim chaplains currently serve on many campuses throughout the country. The IOK brand of chaplaincy stands out in that our chaplains have all gone through the western university experience as students. This experience lends relevance to the ministry initiative on college campuses and the student demographic being served. In addition, our chaplains are grounded in traditional Islamic academic training and have had ample experience in serving the local community from both a leadership and educational standpoint. Furthermore, our team is committed to continuing our education in the realm of pastoral care in order to further improve and add value to our services. We are dedicated to adopting and improving upon industry best practices to ensure that the IOK Chaplaincy Initiative is at the forefront of this growing field.

Another thing about our project is that it is entirely community-funded and not run through the universities that we serve. We are in communication with the universities and their administrations and they are aware of our work, but we do not work for them or under them. This actually benefits us in that it allows us to do the work the way that we see is in the best interest of the students without having to be confined by the politics and interests of the universities themselves.

Lastly, our program is unique in that not only is it community funded, but also that we span multiple campuses under one umbrella. Whereas most chaplaincy programs are focused on one university, being able to serve multiple campuses with multiple chaplains allows us greater flexibility and more potential for collaboration between our chaplains.

Who Are Our Chaplains?

Shaykh Jamaal Diwan - Serves USC and UCI
He was born and raised in Southern California. His mother is from Newfoundland, Canada and his father from Karachi, Pakistan. He grew up in a household that strongly emphasized good manners, sports, and education. Most of his childhood was filled with playing basketball, studying, and spending time with friends. He did not grow up as a Muslim and it was not until he was a sophomore at UCSD that he accepted Islam at the age of 19. His journey was a combination of multiple influences including Underground Hip-Hop, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, reading the Quran, and meeting Muslims on campus. Slightly before his last year at UCSD he married his wife, Muslema Purmul. He graduated from UCSD with a BA in Third World Studies and a minor in Psychology. After finishing they both went to Egypt where they studied off and on for the better part of the next 7 years. At the end of that journey he finished the equivalent of a law degree in Sharia from al-Azhar University in Cairo and nearly completed an MA in Islamic Studies from the American University in Cairo. He thereafter served as Religious Director for the Muslim American Society Greater Los Angeles Chapter for six months before transitioning to the Islamic Center of Irvine where he served as the Resident Scholar for two and a half years. During that time his work was highlighted by a number of local media outlets and he published a small booklet called “A Brief Introduction to Islam.” He serves the Muslim students at USC and UCI.

After spending ten years in the Prophet’s City of Medina, he has returned home to Southern California and joined the Institute of Knowledge (IOK) in Diamond Bar as an Instructor in the Seminary and Extension Programs, as well as a University Chaplain. What Have People Said About Our Work?

Dr. Varun Soni, Dean of Religious Life at USC:

“We are deeply honored and profoundly grateful to welcome Shaykh Jamaal and Shaykha Muslema to the University of Southern California as our Muslim Chaplains. In this capacity, they will provide pastoral care and spiritual counseling, mentor graduate and undergraduate students, support programs and events, and cultivate and inspire a vibrant Muslim community on campus. Given their extraordinary breadth of knowledge and experience, their presence on campus will immeasurably enrich our entire university campus. Furthermore, by serving as Muslim Chaplains and by being staff members in the Office of Religious Life, they will not only be advocates and ambassadors at USC, but will also have the opportunity to help shape regional, national, and global discourses about Islam.”

Imam Zaid Shakir, Co-Founder of Zaytuna College:

“IOK is a pioneering institution in terms of bringing relevance and vitality to our great Islamic tradition. Its chaplaincy initiative is reaching our youth on a growing number of colleges campuses, helping them to cultivate a strong Islamic identity. That is why I say, “IOK is AOK!”

Engie Salama, Former MSU President at USC and Current Pharmacy School Student at UCSF:

“I can’t stress enough how important Jamaal Diwan and Muslema Purmul’s chaplaincy initiative with USC and UCLA, funded by the Institute of Knowledge, is for the young adult Muslim population. Often times in college we encounter challenging perspectives and end up questioning our faith-- without a clear and accessible mentor, how are we to navigate these spiritual pitfalls? As students and young men and women, we face all sorts of social, political and intellectual pressure rejecting our Muslim identity: whether through friends encouraging us to drink, republican candidates claiming they will put us in internment camps, or philosophies rejecting God altogether. I personally have benefitted from their amazing insight and support, and as a former leader of my MSU, I recognize the value they add to our Muslim community. If you want to help future generations of young Muslims through much needed counseling and spiritual guidance, I urge you to support these excellent scholars. I pray for their success and admire their work. Thank you, Jamaal and Muslema, for all the stories you listen to, the secrets you keep, and the amazing advice you give!”

Malek Arhara, Former MSA President at UCR:

“As President of MSA at UCR, it was extremely comforting to know that if members needed assistance I could direct them to a qualified individual that could not only answer their questions, but resolve concerns as well. Shaykh Ahmad AlKurdy was not just a problem solver, but a great friend. He was easy to approach, likable, and among the best company. I am not only speaking for myself. The members of MSA, as a whole, echo these same sentiments. The Chaplain was a blessing that revitalized MSA.”

Sara AbdelFatah, Former UCR MSA Board Member:

“Having Ahmad AlKurdy at UCR was an amazing resource for emotional and religious support. Knowing there was a trusted and reliable source that was easily accessible on campus did wonders for the morale of MSA. As Sisters Chair, having a Chaplain who we were familiar with, aided us in discussing issues among sisters in the community with trust and confidence. I would highly recommend all MSAs to establish Chaplaincy and benefit from this fruitful program.”
