Officer Amir Abdul-Khaliq: This is for you!

The Austin Police Department (APD) lost one of it's finest today: a 16-year veteran of the force, a former U.S. Marine and a father of five. Officer Amir Abdul-Khaliq succumbed to his injuries this afternoon (Sunday September 4th) after his police motorcycle was involved in an accident with a sedan making an illegal maneuver. He was escorting a funeral procession in north Austin at the time. 

Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi Rajioun. To God we belong and to Him is our return. May the Lord bestow His Grace and Mercy on Officer Khaliq and give comfort to his grieving family and may he be granted a high honor in the heavens. Ameen.

It's a great loss for our community and the APD. Our fond memories of Officer Khaliq include praying with him regularly at NAMCC and at the Nueces Mosque. He would often join the kids of Austin Peace Academy in daily mid-day prayers as well. He was a stern, no-nonsense representative of the Law who had a beautiful smile that would light up any room, and one that shined through his thick epic beard. After he got to know you a little better, he would crack some pretty funny jokes and off-the-cuff observations about this, that and the other. On some days, he used to take off his duty belt, placing it next to him before praying and would sometimes show us what he had on his Batman-like utility kit. 


During tense political times, he was known to have walked and escorted female Muslim students around campus as extra protection and security for them. He was a great ambassador of Islam and the Austin Muslim community and he served his faith, his community and his nation with honor and distinction. He will be dearly missed.

This campaign is about raising funds to support and serve the Abdul-Khaliq family. The funds will be handled by 512 Brothers & Sisters dba AustinCares (austin-cares.org) and all accumulated funds (minus the fees for hosting this campaign) will be transferred to the Abdul-Khaliq family.  512 Brothers & Sisters dba AustinCares is a registered non-profit 501 (c) organization.
