When Muslimat Al-Nisaa made an appeal for donations to one of my undergraduate alum, we immediately thought to create a LaunchGood page to crowd source from our community. The work of Muslimat Al-Nisaa is critical in addressing the need of social services to homeless and underserved populations-especially to women and children.
As a Muslim community, it is our obligation to assist and support women working to rebuild lives for themselves. It is imperative that a shelter that is working to support sustainability and self sufficiency for women have access to internet and television, so they too can utilize the opportunities to come with digital access. By bridging the digital divide, all women at the shelter have access to resources and services beyond the walls of Muslimat Al-Nisaa.
The campaign aims to address the digital needs of the shelter. With access to TV and Internet, women at the shelter can search for jobs, communicate with friends and family, and stay connected with current events.
The mission of Muslimat Al Nisaa shelter is to provide health, education, shelter and other social services to the under-served population in general, and to Muslim women and children in particular.
Background
Muslimat Al Nisaa Shelter originally organized in 1987, is a non-profit organization established to provide culturally sensitive health, education, and social services to Muslim community women and children. In 2005, co-founders Asma Hanif and Dr. Maryam Funches, recognized the need to add a shelter program to the original organizational objectives.
This organization helps women get back on their feet and provides a place for them while they are in a time of need. Many women come from other countries and need assistance until they have work authorization, some are victims of domestic abuse, and others are just homeless and have no where to go that can cater to a muslim woman.
This organization gets no state funding and only continues with help from the community. At times, they don't even have electricity due to lack of funds. Without electricity, basic necessities of light and the ability to keep warm is very tough, let alone trying to stand back up on their own feet and connect with the rest of the world.
