Whether you play or just watch for fun, baseball has always been a significant part of our culture growing up in Toronto, Canada. Just like hockey and basketball, it was a foundational sport we learned to play as kids and was also part of our physical education curriculum at school. Now living in Dubai, where sports such as football (soccer) and cricket take precedence due to popularity and culture on this side of the globe, baseball training seemed non-existent. For fun, we still sported our Blue Jays caps while playing catch with the mitts we brought with us from home. Until one day, during a search online, I came across the Dubai Little League website!

We always try to catch a game when we go home and after our 2016 visit when we watched the Jays live at the Rogers Centre, Na’eema expressed her enthusiasm to really learn the game. Thus began my search...

Dubai Little League was already a couple of months into the season but she was invited to come and check it out. And if she was comfortable enough, she could join in the practice. Well, not only did she fall in love with the game but with it  ~ the unity, encouragement and sportsWOMANship among the players. “Mama, I REALLY wanna play...” she whispered with those sparkling eyes and a smile from ear to ear, walking off the field on that first day of practice. 

Being still somewhat of a rookie, we were a bit hesitant. However, she was certainly determined! Whipping those pitches at her “Abee” (Dad) with unrelenting conviction, “I AM going to Singapore!” #AffirmationsManifest

In between classes, homework, practices, home chores and even while on the school bus, Na’eema has been busy making beautifully handmade friendship bracelets because she wanted to have a personal and special way of thanking those who have put their own hands into her aspiration. We will also be creating a video documenting her entire journey to share her experiences with you.
