Why Are We Doing This?

Somalia is a country in crisis. It faces unprecedented drought which has caused the displacement of nearly a million people. A large portion of the population are suffering from acute hunger, and conflict is rife in the country. Some communities barely have access to water. Roughly, less than 40% of the population have access to adequate safe water sources. Over half the population are in need of immediate humanitarian relief and the construction of deep wells will reduce the tension caused by several towns and villages sharing one water source. It is important to note that this one water source may not always be available and is often unsafe for
consumption.

The water crisis affects the more vulnerable communities in rural areas. The majority of these residents are more likely to die from diseases like cholera, dysentery and other infectious diseases. Children under five and elderly people are most at risk and as such the life expectancy in rural communities is significantly low. There is a critical need in these communities for deep tube wells so that safe drinking water is readily available.

How does it Work?

We are partnering with Penny Appeal USA, a Muslim relief and development organization that provides services to people of all backgrounds and faiths across the world. Their signature Thirst Relief program has been providing safe and clean water through the construction of over 100 wells across Asia and Africa, providing clean and safe water to over 40,000 people. Three wells have been established in various parts of Somalia and we hope that through this fundraiser, together, we will establish two additional deep wells. Each well is 35 meters (114 feet) deep. All funds raised will go directly to Penny Appeal USA for this specific project. Once we reach our goal, Penny Appeal USA in conjunction with its local partner in Somalia, will decide on the location of the wells based on where the need is the greatest. The entire process from selecting the locations to establishing the deep wells, and providing hygiene and maintenance session to locals takes about 9-12 months. At that time, a report will be produced with details of the recipient community, pictures and statements of gratitude. InshaaAllah we will share this report with you once it becomes available.
