What is Project Sadaqa?

Created by MSA Lone Star Council (LSC), Project Sadaqa is an annual collaborative effort from all MSAs to give back to those in need. This initiative started in 2013, when Texas MSAs came together at the state capitol to volunteer. The goal of Project Sadaqa is to build relations with our community by volunteering our time and efforts to help those in need. From now until Showdown 2019, MSA members will raise as many funds as possible with their respective school. At the end of the given time frame, the funds will be collected from all the schools by LSC and donated to Penny Appeal USA to provide communities across the globe with access to clean, safe drinking water by building wells. Project Sadaqa is a project of the annual MSA LSC Showdown, hosted in the Spring.

Who is Penny Appeal USA?

Established in 2015, Penny Appeal is a nonprofit development organization working to alleviate poverty through sustainable programs. Their mission is to bring about an equitable world by tackling the root causes of poverty while bridging the gap between funders and poor communities in order to work together on long-term solutions that can help end intergenerational poverty.

Penny Appeal prides itself on transparency, sustainability, and innovation. Penny Appeal serves a wide variety of causes and programs, including Beyond Bagged Lunches, Digital Divide, Feed Our World, Income Generation, OrphanKind, and Thirst Relief, as well as emergency campaigns for the Rohingya and Yemen.

What are we funding?

Clean water is a basic necessity, yet over 1 billion people have no access to safe drinking water and almost half of the world’s population lack adequate sanitation. Without safe, clean water, communities cannot thrive; instead, they suffer from a variety of disease caused by contaminated water. Being too sick to work or go to school ensures that the people of these communities are trapped in a cycle of poverty.

Enter: Thirst Relief. Through Thirst Relief, we’re building wells to provide millions to access to safe and consumable water. The goal is simple: to provide clean water to every person who needs it, and to make sure that no person ever has to drink dirty water ever again. Thirst Relief is a campaign that builds life-saving, sustainable wells in impoverished communities across the world.

By providing access to clean, safe drinking water—as well as sanitation and hygiene education—we can promote educated and healthy societies. This campaign will build water wells and hand pumps in Bangladesh, India, Kashmir, Nepal, Niger, Pakistan, Somalia, and Sudan.
