Kashmir is Under Siege

          On August 5, 2019, the Hindu nationalist BJP government of India laid siege to the people of Kashmir.  This is the fulfillment of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s campaign promise to realize the Hindu extremist agenda by permanently extinguishing Kashmiri aspirations for self-determination.

          For over one month now, Kashmiris have been under virtually complete military-enforced lockdown and isolation. They have endured restrictions on movement; soldiers at every corner; and suppression of speech and communication through denial of internet, cell, and landline services. Journalists and observers have been denied access to Kashmir; political and civil society leaders are detained or under house arrest; commercial activity is curtailed and livelihoods denied.  Meetings of more than four people are banned, and when Kashmiris dare to protest, the military responds with violence and force using pellet guns to maim and blind them, also placing thousands of people under arrest.  And now, hospitals don't have necessary medicines and are being told to turn patients away and refuse to issue death certificates so that the Indian government can continue to claim that there have been no deaths.

          The response to this crisis domestically and internationally has been virtual silence.  The United Nations discussed the crisis for the first time in 45 years, but has not taken action. The government of the United States, our government, has barely said a word about the situation on the ground. 

          The silence must end.  U.S. policy makers and representatives to the United Nations must hear our demand for action.  We must give voice to the people of Kashmir.

          Help us mount a pressure campaign through high impact advertising in New York and Washington D.C. to get U.S. policy makers, world leaders, and U.N. officials to stand up, speak out, and support the Kashmiri people by demanding that the Indian government respect and restore their human rights.

          We will be looking for high-impact advertising such as billboards and targeted digital advertising building awareness and calling for action or digital advertising targeting policy makers.
