Feminine Hygiene Care: A Neglected Need

Can you imagine getting your period as a displaced Syrian woman and having no access to feminine hygiene products?

Ever since I read an article about the lack of hygiene care for women refugees, I have been inspired to do something. So I decided to start a fund to collect donations to provide dignity packs for refugee women in Greece. These packs will contain pads, underwear, and wipes- amenities that we take for granted but are a dire need for these women.

Imagine as a female traveling hundreds of miles by sea, with nothing but the clothes on your back, and having to also deal with your monthly cycle. These women are under stress, and to suffer the humiliation of not having the basic needs at that time of the month is no indignity any woman should experience.

It may seem like such an insignificant luxury, but it is one that can help a Syrian woman regain some strength and dignity in such a trying time.

Providing Dignity Packs to Syrian Refugee Women in Greece

I researched long and hard to find the best way to purchase these items. I coordinated with groups on the ground in Greece through a Facebook group, and it seems the easiest way to do this is by sending the money overseas and buying the products locally. There are many local businesses who are working with the volunteers to provide much-needed items for a good price.

I have been hesitant to send the funds through wire transfer as I do not know these organizations very well. So instead, I will be sending the funds with my dear friend and fellow humanitarian Meria Yasin, who will be working on the island of Chios, Greece from December 20th- January 5th. She is going with Remote Area Medical, a local group in Tennessee which will provide medical aid at a local hospital there. Meira will be able to purchase the needed items and distribute them locally.

How You Can Help

Any amount donated will help! The average price for a dignity pack is $5. The more you donate, the more women we can help.

If you cannot donate, please feel free to share this campaign with all your family and friends. Let's do our part to help these women as they suffer through the journey of the unknown.

WE DID IT!

Thanks to your incredible generosity, we exceeded our twice-extended goal of $15,000!

I cannot express my thanks enough for all your help in making this campaign a success. You have given over 3,000 women the chance at gaining back their dignity and pride while they make the journey to Greece and beyond.

Keep checking back for updates as we put the funds to good use in a couple weeks.

I, and the women of Syria, thank you once again!

Over $7000 raised, and more to come!

THANK YOU!

I cannot express my gratitude to those who have donated so far. We surpassed my initial goal of $5000 before midnight last night- and that was just DAY ONE! I have since increased the goal to $10,000, and it seems as though that may be hit before the day's end.

Since the campaign has been so popular, I have decided that if we hit or surpass the $10,000 I will split the funds between the refugee women in Greece, and those in the Zaatari camp in Jordan, where I recently visited in a medical mission.

Please continue to share the campaign with family and friends. Know that you are making a huge difference in these women's lives. My thanks will never be enough!

All the best,

Jinan
