We all love stories.

Think back to a time you were hanging on to every word of a good story.

You didn’t want the story to end. You can get lost in a good story, encapsulated and mesmerised by the characters and the adventures they go on. When you’re reading a good book you’re the one pacing the story and giving life to the characters in your mind's eye.

You can’t put a good book down, as they say.

A good book is powerful and will help the reader experience what is happening, helping them to visualise and retain the lessons. The Quran is full of the best stories and Allah’s words are the MOST powerful.

So why is it then, that people love stories so much but view reading the Quran as difficult, or worse still, as a chore?

We read the Quran but we don’t understand Arabic. This already puts a barrier between you and the words of Allah, which weakens your relationship with Him.

Then when you try and read the traditional translations they are in old, outdated English, which leaves you more confused. Not to mention the fact that they’re complicated to read, with verse by verse translation, tiny fonts and footnotes galore.

None of this is conducive to a rich reading experience.

This happens to many of us every time we open up the Quran. We read but we do not feel. We do not understand. Therefore we don’t get to truly experience His divine words.

We cannot experience something we do not understand.

The Quran itself was revealed in a very clear Arabic tongue. For the people of that time, the Quran was not considered advanced in terms of vocabulary, it was actually less advanced than some of the poetry at the time. This was because it was for the people, and to be understood, implemented and lived by. Somewhere along the line, as we’ve translated into English that spirit has been lost.

In a world increasingly devoid of guidance, we desperately wanted to work on an alternative.

A world of information is readily available at our fingertips, all designed to keep us consuming mostly useless information. Nothing is as good for the soul as the Quran. So why not make it easy and enjoyable to experience? This was our objective.

We believe the more you experience the Quran, the more you transform.

It is experience, and not merely reading that transforms the Quran from your hand to your heart to your soul. Only then can we implement its teachings fully.

So, why is there so much focus on 'experience?'

An experience - whether good or bad - is often memorable. It leads to connection and heightened awareness. Every part of you is conscious and engaged. Imagine a roller coaster - you can't experience a roller coaster unless you’re fully engaged. Everything is alive when you’re on the roller coaster, your brain, your heart, your eyes, and your soul.

That’s the journey we should be going on.

If we can experience the Quran for ourselves, this will get us a deeper connection with Allah.

The Majestic Quran is the brainchild of Dr Musharraf Hussain Al-Azhari, Director of the Karimia Institute in Nottingham and translator of The Majestic Quran. As a prolific author of over 30 books, this has been a labour of love for over 4 years.

The traditional world of scholarly Quranic translation collided with the innovative world of cutting edge design thinking in bringing experienced UX designer Sajhd Hussain on board to reimagine the layout for maximum user experience whilst staying true to the key traditions.

This collaboration has truly resulted in something unique, ready to benefit the Ummah.

To craft the best user experience, we focused on revamping two areas, language and design.

Language and Ease

The Majestic Quran is translated into very modern, plain easy to understand English. Thou and arts are now you and are.

We have done away with atomised verse by verse translation which goes against our natural human behaviour and instead placed paragraphs of text side by side with the Arabic which we then summarised into themes and headers.

Humans are geared towards reading blocks of text at a time, so why shouldn’t our translations be the same? You can read a full page, then read the translation to understand the bigger picture. This helps to internalise it.This also helps you to see the structure and how all the passages link together.

The Quran instructs the reader to ponder, to reflect, to think over and over again so each page includes a ‘lessons for life’, which is a prompt for the reader to think about.

Each surat starts with a contextual summary, which explains when it was revealed, why, and the overall theme of the surat. There are also very limited footnotes.

UX Design and Layout

With book design, the experience is something we don’t often think about. But a good book is actually doing work to eliminate distractions for the reader and doing its best to present the content in a way that is beautiful and inviting for the reader and makes the story the centre of the reader's experience.

That was Sajhd’s design vision for The Majestic Quran. We had to think deeply about what aspects can be enhanced to improve the experience and what needed to remain. Space is essential. To let the book breathe and come to life. So you can focus on what is important.

The Majestic Quran has adopted the classic Indo-Pak typeface, which in the spirit of user-friendliness is the easiest to read amongst all the traditional scripts. Every single page has been formatted manually, line by line and started with a blank canvas, only adding non-essential elements back in if they enhance the experience.

Everything has been split with coloured section headers in order to space everything out and to make the Quran digestible.

Within the margin, there is space to make notes so you can interact with and study the Quran.

All backers will get a beautifully crafted Majestic Quran designed to enhance your experience of the Divine communication. You will also get a bookmark (to save your place) and a fridge magnet (to remind you to read!) with your perk.

The remainder of your funds, depending on the perk level will go towards producing and distributing paperback versions which will act as a sadaqah jariah of making the Majestic Quran available to the masses and to non-Muslims as dawah.
