A United Nations publication lists “Safe Water as the Key to Global Health. “No other single intervention is more likely to have a significant impact on global poverty than the provision of safe water.”
Islamic Relief is committing $6 million of support toward water and sanitation projects this Ramadan.
IRUSA’s most recent well-based water projects are focused in Mali, Chad, Niger, Malawi, and Nepal, some of the most vulnerable areas to drought and some of the most lacking with proper sanitation facilities.
These projects also providing training and jobs to the community who receive the wells; the local community members are responsible for the maintenance, and are trained to make sure the wells last for the long haul. That means your donation today is the sadaqah jariyeh that will serve our brothers and sisters in need for many years to come.
663 million people do not have proper access to a good water source—that’s 1 in 10 people in the world.
Without water to drink, people can’t live. Without water for their crops and livestock, they can’t eat enough or earn a living. If their water isn’t clean, they won’t be healthy. If their water comes from a faraway source, they have to spend their days carrying it instead of going to school or earning an income—this affects women and girls the most.
Closely linked to clean water is sanitation. More than one-third of the world’s population—2.5 billion people—do not have improved sanitation facilities, and 1 billion of them still practice open defecation. Too often, this contaminates the community’s water source, threatening people’s health and lives.
Abu Hurairah (Allah be pleased him) reported that Allah’s Prophet (Peace be upon him) said: “On the Day of Judgment, Allah, the Exalted, will say: “.. “O son of Adam! I asked you to give water to Me, but you did not give it to Me! ”The son of Adam will say: “O Allah, How come You ask me for water even though You are the Lord of the Worlds?” Allah will say: “My slave asked you for water and you refused to give him. Don’t you know that if you had given him water, i would have rewarded you?” (Note: Reported by Muslim in Al-Birr Wal Silah, (No.2569))
