Remove false ideas about Suicide in the Muslim community through education.

Our Goal: Remove the false ideas about suicide prevalent in the Muslim community.

Host a seminar, sponsor research, support scholarship on this sensitive topic.

As someone personally affected by suicide, I am determined to leverage my Islamic studies background to produce material that will help remove the stigma around this topic. I've partnered with the counselors and therapists at Sakinah Center, Houston Texas to create research and materials to address the theological and fiqhi implications around suicide that are missing from much of the material available to chaplains, Imams, community workers, leaders, and laymen.

This project seeks to do the following:

I - Produce High Quality, Islamically Grounded Research

The first goal of this project is to produce scholarly research to better serve community leaders and servants. One obstacle to tackling the stigma of Suicide is that much of the research has not tackled the deep seated theological and legal issues that must be addressed in order to resolve the many false theologies and anecdotal understandings that Muslims have about suicide and treatment of suicide survivors and their families.

II - Make that Research Available to the Public

The research produced, along with the empirical data collected along the way, will be made available through a knowledge base for researchers, community workers, and the general public. Our goal is to reach as many people possible by creating an online repository that is accessible to academics, scholars, and laymen alike.

III - Engage and Educate the Community

While research is a necessity, it is only effective when it reaches the broader community. Workshops and seminars that educate community leaders, laymen, and the public are in high demand. These workshops will include topics relevant to suicide, suicide ideation, funeral rites, and care for the deceased, survivors, and their families, spanning the rich legal, ethical, and theological landscape that our Islamic studies heritage provides but has seldom been addressed when speaking on these topics. These will be provided through public webinars, cultural competence training, and community education programs (khutab, lectures, workshops, etc.)

First Webinar a Success!

Salam alaikum everyone,

By the grace of Allah, through your generous support, and awareness raised by this campaign I completed the first webinar as promised yesterday for an international group for an international group of counselors and carers who work exclusively with Muslims & non-Muslims dealing with issues of depression and suicidal thoughts. The webinar span a period of 2 hours and we had 54 attendees.

Here is feedback from one of the attendees:

"Very beneficial webinar ma shaa Allah. It's an important topic and Sheikh Joe was well-prepared. Hopefully we can do similar webinars with him in the future in shaa Allah. This is probably the best one I attended."

Again thank you so much for your generous supportand I do hope that you will continue your support of mental health initiatives in the Muslim community.
