Islamic quotes on education

By Yusuf Jaffar

3 min read

Education holds a significant place in Islam, not just as a pursuit of knowledge but as a moral and spiritual responsibility.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ emphasized the importance of learning, seeking knowledge, and sharing it for the benefit of humanity.

Islamic education quotes from the Prophet ﷺ  and the Quran

Obligation to seek knowledge

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ  said, "Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim" (Sunan Ibn Majah 224). This hadith establishes the pursuit of knowledge as a fundamental duty for all Muslims.

Path to paradise
"Whoever takes a path in search of knowledge, Allah will make easy for him a path to Paradise" (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2699). This hadith illustrates the spiritual rewards associated with seeking knowledge.

The sacredness of knowledge
"The ink of the scholar is more sacred than the blood of the martyr." (weak hadith). This saying highlights the profound respect and value placed on scholarly pursuits and intellectual contributions.

Continuous charity (Sadaqah Jariyah)

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said, "When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: Sadaqah Jariyah (continuous charity), knowledge from which benefit is gained, or a righteous child who prays for him" (Muslim).

Elevation of status
Surah Al-Mujadila (58:11) states, "Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge by degrees." This verse highlights that gaining knowledge elevates a person's status in the sight of Allah, granting them higher ranks in this life and the hereafter.

Divine favor
Teaching and spreading knowledge is highly esteemed in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad said, "Allah, the angels, the inhabitants of heaven and earth, even the ant in its hole and the fish in the sea, send blessings upon the one who teaches people good" (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi). This statement underscores the spiritual rewards and divine favor granted to those who impart beneficial knowledge.

The Blessings of donating to support knowledge

Supporting education has been a fundamental principle in Islam since the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions (Sahabah).

Madrasah Ahl al-Suffah:
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ established one of the earliest formal educational institutions in Medina, adjacent to the Prophet’s Mosque. This institution provided a space for learning both religious and worldly knowledge, supported by donations from the Muslim community. It highlighted the collective effort in promoting education and knowledge-sharing within the early Muslim society.

Uthman ibn Affan:
Uthman ibn Affan was renowned for his immense generosity and support for the Islamic community. He financed the expansion of the Prophet's Mosque in Medina, transforming it into a key center for learning and education. This expansion allowed more people to gather, learn, and engage in religious and educational activities, further strengthening the community's educational foundation.

Abdurrahman ibn Awf’s Support for the Mothers of the Believers:
After the death of the Prophet Muhammad, Abdurrahman ibn Awf took responsibility for supporting the Prophet's widows, known as the Mothers of the Believers. He provided stipends from his own wealth and financed their pilgrimages to Mecca. This support allowed them to continue their roles as educators and transmitters of knowledge within the Muslim community. Abdurrahman ibn Awf's Broader Contributions: Beyond his direct support for education, Abdurrahman ibn Awf engaged in acts that had educational implications. For example, he freed many slaves and provided financial gifts to survivors of battles like Badr, helping stabilize their lives and enabling them to focus on learning and teaching Islam.
