In Afghanistan, where winter temperatures can easily plunge to -25°C, many families are left vulnerable. 

Winter arrives only months after June’s earthquake in south-eastern Paktika and Khost provinces, where thousands of homes are destroyed. 

Alamir was among them. “All our children were standing outside with no shoes. UNHCR and their staff helped us a lot. They brought us flour, sugar, tea, tents, and other things we needed in the trucks. They brought us almost everything.”

UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, is providing Afghan families with life-saving essentials like blankets, stoves, solar lanterns, insulation kits, clothes, and cash support for rent and heating.

Inamullah, 30, with a cooking set he received from UNHCR. His family received $225 cash for rent, along with food and other aid items.

Inamullah says, “A rocket hit the house, and everything turned into dust. My parents are traumatised and still haven’t come out of the shock. When we came here, we had nothing, so the assistance from UNHCR was a big help. The rent here is 7000 Afghanis, it is very hard to find rent and support my family.”

Muhammad collects emergency supplies where UNHCR has provided 10,000 tents and other aid items.

Relief items are ready for distribution. Supplies include tents, blankets, jerry cans, plastic sheeting, kitchen utensils and solar lamps. 

This year, the situation is more desperate than ever.

• $150 can provide a tent insulation kit to one family, helping them survive winter.
