Due to factors like the impact of violence, insecurity, population displacement, limited access to food, health, water and sanitation services, and the rise in food prices, as well as the socio-economic impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, the situation in Africa has become gravely alarming. 9 out of 10 African children do not meet the criteria for minimum acceptable diet outlined by the World Health Organization. 2 out of 5 don’t eat meals regularly.

Here’s how you can reach out and provide essential support in major areas of need:

1) Food Basket

According to the Hunger Hotspots Report from the World Food Programme (WFP) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Ethiopia, Nigeria, and South Sudan remain the countries of highest concern, where people are projected to experience starvation and death, requiring the most urgent attention. 

With only $75 to feed an entire family, you can put a Food Basket on the table, in homes where they have no idea where their next meal will come from. You are making it easier to honor the fast this Ramadan. These Food Baskets are loaded with staples like grains, beans, oil and more.

2) Clean and Sanitary Water

400 million people in sub-Saharan Africa lack access to basic drinking water. And along with the need for water has come the need for a sustainable source of it – like wells and pipelines.

This Ramadan, you can utilize your Zakat to quench the thirst of an entire population by helping build a Water Well [Surface $2,500 – Artisanal $4,600 – Solar $5,500]. Donate a water well to give clean water and a lifelong blessing for those in need. You may contribute the entire cost of the well or help alongside others.

3) Orphan Sponsorship

Africa is home to more than a quarter of all orphans with approximately 140 million orphans in the world, Africa’s 52 million make up more than 30 percent of the entire orphan population.

With only $50 monthly, your support will enable children without guardians to receive quality education, lead healthy lifestyles and gain skills to succeed as adults. 

4) Education

Every child has the right to go to school, but many are deprived of their chances at a basic education. But for more than 38 million children in Africa, school, a school desk, a notebook, or a teacher are still only a dream.

Uplift disadvantaged Africans working towards improving education to ensure students can become global citizens while positively impacting their communities, with only a $100 every month.

How you can give your Zakat to Africa: 

Zakat Al-Mal – Donate 2.5% of your total wealth to complete a pillar of our faith by giving to the above-mentioned zakat-eligible programs. Everyday people like you change the world. Your support provides a lifeline to those who need it most.

Zakat Al-Fitr – Paid by the head of the household for each member of the family after completing your Fast, through Africa Relief, donate only $15 of your Zakat Al-Fitr, purifying this act of worship from any shortcomings this Ramadan.
