Our Journey: Traditional Knowledge and Beneficial Technology 

My name is Abdalqadir Schaller. I was born in San Antonio, Texas to a German/American father and a Mexican mother, both of whom had become Muslim separately before I was born. I have grown up in the US and Europe and have always lived in Muslim communities wherever I have been. At the age of 20, I helped my Quran teacher establish a Quran school in Mallorca, Spain. I was the director of this school for 10 years. I later moved back to Granada, where I had spent most of my childhood, and have been here ever since.

I am currently the Cultural Director of the Granada Mosque and together with other members of the Board, we have begun transforming a barren plot of land into an education facility and ecological farm. Its name is Alqueria Al Kawthar. 

As the Muslim community grows we have a pressing need to educate our children in the Deen in a dignified manner and also to continue doing Dawa, both through a unique and innovative approach: to reconnect with our Fitrah and our responsibility as khalifas of Allah on earth. And what better way to do that than growing our own produce and benefitting those around us, Muslim and non-Muslim alike.

The basis of any human community is education, good food and health. At Alqueria Al Kawthar we bring these elements together in the most efficient and sustainable way using traditional knowledge and beneficial technology to make it all work, by the permission of Allah.

ALQUERIA AL KAWTHAR

The historic Alquería (from the Arabic: القرية al-qaria, "farmstead, village") was a farmhouse, with an agricultural estate in the time of Al Andalus (711-1492 AD).

You could find almost everything you needed to live there: Residence, Farming, Agriculture, Handicrafts, a Mosque, Qur'an School, even a Cemetery.

​The lands of Al-Andalus were full of Alquerias. Together with the Auqaf they were a key element in the natural development of the Islamic civilization. They were usually self-sufficient. Today, our Alqueria Al-Kawthar is a working farm and education facility founded on the principles of holistic education, sustainable development, and an efficient and respectful approach to farming.

It is a transformative autonomous zone. A place for personal development for people of all ages through experience-based activities, workshops, and courses that encourage a renewed contact with nature and promote a more responsible understanding of productivity.

We have our own water well with abundant water and we have already planted many fruit trees such as figs, pecan, apples, hazelnuts, date palms, and much more. The next step is to start with seasonal vegetables and introduce farm animals.
