UPDATE (Aug 30):

Alhamdulillah! Because of your generosity, we were able to feed around 1200 flood affected families in the last 7 days. However, we are not done yet. The following next steps are even more important: 

• We will build disaster resilient shallow tubewells and latrines in the first week of September. Each of these tubewells will cost around $400. Usually, a tubewell like this can serve around 15 families for years! This is a chance for you to make a Sadaqah Jariyah (ongoing charity).
• We are surveying different affected areas to see if there are need to set up medical camps. If necessary, we will distribute medicines so that there is no breaking out of epidemic.
  

Food distribution on Aug 26 and Aug 29:

Current Situation (Aug 24): 

• "The situation is going from bad to worse"

• In Bangladesh, the death toll climbed to 132 while some 7.5 million people have been affected by this year’s floods, according to the Disaster Management Ministry.

• Crops on more than 10,000 hectares (24,710 acres) of land have been washed away while another 600,000 hectares (1,482,600 acres) have been damaged, posing a serious threat to food production, the ministry said Thursday.
• “Many flood survivors have lost everything: their homes, their possessions, their crops,” Christa Rader, WFP’s Bangladesh country director, said in a statement. “People need food right now, and the full impact on longer-term food security threatens to be devastating.”

Background: More than 35% of Bangladesh flooded, atleast 5M marooned.

Water from upstream and incessant monsoon rains continue to inundate large parts of Bangladesh. As of 18 August, flooding has left 70 people dead and nearly 5 million people marooned in nearly 25 districts (out of 64) in Bangladesh. Deputy Director IFRC Asia Pacific region, Martin Faller said "More than one-third of Bangladesh and Nepal have been flooded and we fear the humanitarian crisis will get worse in the days and weeks ahead".

The North is the most affected. Vast areas in Rangpur, Nilphamari, Dinajpur, and Kurigram, and Gaibandha districts have gone under water after the flood, triggered by downpour and onrush of water from the upstream, broke several flood protection embankments in the northern districts.

Food and drinking water crisis

Flood affected people are reeling from a drinking water and food crisis because of insufficient relief materials. Your little contribution to the affected people can help alleviate their sufferings and bring them 

Severe crop damage

The flash flood situation in the haor region is taking a massive toll on Bangladesh. Many are saying that this is the worst crop damage in recorded history. 200,000 hectares of croplands ready for harvesting have been destroyed, and this harvest supplies the region with staple food for the whole year. Approximately 213 metric tonnes of fish and 3000 ducks have also died, leaving families in the poorest region of the country with no source of livelihood.


$10 would feed a family for a week

• More than 200,000 people affected by floods at 28 union councils in four Upazilas of Gaibandha district. Our first plan is to go to the affected remote areas of Gaibandha, on August 29 to distribute food baskets.

• On August 26, in Sha Allah, we will distribute food baskets to the flood victims of Erendabari, Jamalpur district.

Our food basket will include:

• Rice: 4kgs 
• Pulses: 1kg
• Flatenned Rice: 2kgs
• Molasses: 1kg/ Half kg
• Potato: 1kg
• Salt: 1kg
• Saline: 10 packets 
• Potassium alum and solar light/candles.

Whoever helps ease someone in difficulty, Allah will make it easy for him in this world and in the Hereafter". [Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim]

The Prophet (PBUH) said, “There is no deed that is better in the sight of Allah or more greatly rewarded than a good deed done in the (first) ten days of Al-Adha” [Al-Bukhari]

"Project Kombol": Who We Are 

Project Kombol is an initiative taken by two civil society organizations, BANDHU Foundation and Garbo Bangladesh Foundation, which has a vast network covering 34 districts.

Using this network, we are connecting Dhaka based social development projects with NGOs operating outside Dhaka. Armed with local knowledge, these local NGOs will help identify and distribute tokens among vulnerable individuals and communities who suffer the most during a natural or man-made disaster. They will facilitate the clothing distribution process, and make all arrangements for proper distribution before the clothing drive teams arrive from Dhaka.

With the help of these local NGOs, we have identified several remote and hard to reach communities. We raise funds to distribute reliefs in these neglected places. In the initial stage, it was only for winter clothing distribution. That is why it was named ‘Project Kombol’ which means blanket. But using the same network we can provide any help to the remotest area where needy beneficiaries are found.
