Ikram Foundation supports divorced and widowed Muslim women, a majority of whom are survivors of domestic violence to get an education through grants so that they can be employed to earn a living wage.

Breaking the Cycle Of Poverty

We have seen female headed households in our community remain in the cycle of poverty for far too long. We believe in the power of education, mentorship, and opportunities for women who have gone through an immense amount of trauma to help them re-build their lives. 

Like Khadija RA, the single mothers in our community, if given the right tools, have the potential to raise wonderful children and continue in the cycle of philanthropy to uplift our community and make space for women and their experiences. It is our collective responsibility to invest in the stability of our community and future generations. 

Ikram Foundation recognizes that there is limited formal support for divorced or widowed Muslim women in the United States. This population along with their children are at an increased risk of poverty, homelessness, loss of family, community support, stigma, shame, and depression.  

Additionally, Muslim women have complex barriers that may affect their ability to be employed. These barriers can include: Lack of education and or work experience, lack of confidence, trauma background, language barriers, health problems, and special needs children.
