Rohingya Language Books for Rohingya Children

Rohingya lost their written form of language for the last many centuries. But the dialect survived for generations through oral teaching. In the 1980s, Mohamed Hanif, an Arabic scholar of Rohingya, invented a new script based on the old one to revive the long-dead Rohingya language. 

Many books and reading materials were produced since then. Typing it in
Microsoft word was possible for the last many years, however, with the
help of researchers it was uni-coded and digitized fully enabling it to
be used in email and web recently.

In the meantime, it is imperative that the Rohingya children be taught in
their mother tongue at primary schools. However, it has become a challenge to supply books and other reading materials in camps without proper organizational funding for its continuation.

Rohingya Association of Canada [RAC] has been working in collaboration with the Language Committee [aka Zuban Committee] and is in a unique position to help thousands of children through your support. Your mere $1 can print 4 to 6 booklets in black & white depending on the grades. Fully colored 18 to 28 pages children booklet costs mere $0.50 per book [or 2 books per $1].  

RAC has distributed so far 5,000 copies of blank & white booklets, as shown in the video clip above, and 15,000 copies full color print. Tens of thousands more are urgently needed.

Who are the Rohingyas?

Rohingyas are indigenous people of Arakan (Rakhine state) from the western part of Myanmar (Burma). They have been driven out from their homeland by Burmese genocidal army. They are stateless, that is, they don't have legal rights to live in any place in the entire world! Their citizenship has been taken away from them by the Myanmar government. In the face of indiscriminate killing, burning, rape, and torture, they fled to neighboring Bangladesh where they are staying in camps for months and years with no end in sight.

Why help with Books?

Tens of thousands of children are growing up without formal education in the
 camps. Teachers that are willing to teach these children do not have books and other teaching materials. In addition, children are struggling with learning a 2nd and 3rd language prior to learning their mother tongue. This project of Learning Their Mother Tongue would enable them to enjoy the learning they have never experienced before. 

Who is Rohingya Association of Canada (RAC)?

RAC is a not-for-profit organization run by a few of the fortunate Rohingya
 who fled the persecution and is currently living in Canada.

Why should I donate to Rohingya Association of Canada (RAC)?

RAC is in a unique position to maximize the effect of your donation by
sending 100% of your donations to the refugees. We are volunteering our
time for this project. Only 5% of your donation (5 cents per dollar)
will be used to cover the transportation and distribution costs. There no other overhead cost of any kind.

Can I get a donation receipt?

Unfortunately, RAC is not a registered charity yet. We are not able to provide a donation receipt.
