The little girl in the photo, is the epitome of what drives us... our inspiration.  She was brought to us at the age of 2, by her parents' former landlord.  With no known living relatives, he cared for her after the passing of her mother... With no where else to go, she was brought to ZASO.  Where she has a home - and a family.   She, alongside the remaining 29 children at our home, we owe it to them not just have a home today  but to ALWAYS have a home & be loved.  This is where we need YOUR help again.

Our mission afternoon ZASO started one year ago.   When we did, what was thought to be impossible (with the help of Launchgood).  From idea to execution we opened the first and only  Orphanage for HIV + children in Zanzibar in eight weeks.  

We have now been fully operational for almost a year.  Giving a home, education & love to 30 of the communities most in need kids.  We’ve grown at such a rate that even the government is asking for our support with high risk children.  Sadly , while our hearts are open to them we have reached our maximum capacity.

In addition, we are now being given notice to leave the existing home.  Both the financial burden of rent and instability of landlords is disruptive and taxing.

A donor has allowed us to secure a down payment on a small plot of fertile land.

The dream is to build a comprehensive home & living center for these kids.  That also allows us to grow with the needs of the orphans.  This center would not only be a home, but be fertile ground to grow some food, a safe open space for them to play and a learning / computer lab for them to develop.  We will start building with whatever money is raise - on a phase by phase basis until we are able to raise the total construction cost!

Zakat eligibility has been confirmed by LaunchGood independently.   However it is important to know that Zakat rulings may differ based on school of thought.  For the majority it is aligned that supporting Needy & Miskeen Orphans is considered Zakat eligible. 

However, land & construction is contested based on your Madhab or scholarly opinion.  Ultimately, Zakat is a personal responsibility, if you have any questions we encourage you to refer to your local scholar to make your best informed decision.
