Building permanent homes for orphans with the emotional, psychological and physical growth they need to chase a brighter future in the face of unspeakable loss

WHAT ARE WE DOING

I traveled to Gambia recently to see firsthand the amazing work PennyAppeal USA is doing. We are building solar powered villages and fully sustainable communities for orphaned children in Gambia. By providing each child with all the essentials for their emotional, psychological, and physical growth, we can help every orphan chase a brighter future in the face of unspeakable loss.

With your help, we want to put smiles on the faces of orphans in Gambia. And keep them there.

We’re building a community centered around nurturing orphaned children. The village complex consists of ten modern homes, a health clinic, a mosque, an administrative building and a large play area (see pics below!). Each of the homes in the village houses 10 orphan children and together with a trained foster mother, they form a family. The community is designed to provide for the complete nurturing of each child through education, access to quality healthcare, and the love of a foster mother to tend to their emotional and psychological needs. Education is the great leveler. For the children in our Orphankind Village, education unlocks a brighter future.

Raising a child is about more than providing food and shelter; it’s about providing nourishment for their entire well-being. This program is designed to work with each child to monitor and improve their intellectual, psychological, emotional, and spiritual development. And by maintaining a culturally-sensitive approach, we can help each child stay connected with their local community.

Here is one solar powered village under construction. It is set to be done within the next month or so, iA.

Each home can house 10 orphans and includes:

- Living room

- Dining room

- Kitchen

- Air conditioning

- 4 bedrooms, 4 bathrooms

The OrphanKind Village will also include

- Health clinic

- Administrative building

- Play ground

- Mosque

- Education center

- Beautiful garden

WHO IS DOING IT

I personally traveled to Gambia myself and saw first hand this incredible effort PennyAppealUSA is doing. I can personally vouch for this as one of many efforts this fantastic non-profit has done to empower thousands of women and children around the world by uplifting them from poverty.

Each fully-sustainable solar powered home PennyAppeal is building in Gambia costs about $50,000 to construct and can house 10 orphans.

That means for $5,000, one orphaned child in Gambia can live in a happy, healthy home and nurtured in a loving environment. That’s all it takes to change one child’s life FOREVER.

WHY GAMBIA

Gambia is one of the poorest nations in the world and there are roughly 80,000 children in the country are orphaned. Gambia is known throughout the African continent as “The Smiling Coast.” What makes the people who live here so vibrant and radiant is how happy, wise and content they are with the lives they live even with resources vastly smaller than the ones we are privileged to have access to.

When I was in Gambia, I met a little girl in one of these orphanages and she asked me to pull out my phone.  She wanted to see pictures of my Mom. She wanted to know everything about my Mom - from the way she laughs, to what the perfume she wears smells like, to all the little sayings and words of wisdom she’s shared with me throughout my entire life.

At first I was a little hesitant to answer her questions, because I wanted to be sensitive to this girl's situation. I didn’t want to come off as “bragging” about my relationship with my mother when this angelic orphaned child doesn’t have the privilege to have something similar.

She could tell I felt uncomfortable answering and she goes “It’s ok, I am the one asking you the questions so do not feel bad answering. I spend every moment I can imagining what it’s like to have a Mother. I like to ask people about their mothers so I can learn from their examples.”

And then she said “I hope I have the opportunity to grow up and be like your Mother some day.”

I’m convinced God sent Angels down to earth and had them wear the disguise of orphans. They are a reminder to each and every one of us the love we need to share with the rest of humanity.

I hope you join us in doing so.

Penny Appeal Allegations of Child Sex Abuse at Its Orphanages

Asalam alaikum and peace be with you all.  Over the weekend, I got word about horrific allegations of widespread child sex abuse happening at Penny Appeal orphanages in The Gambia. Some of the very same orphanages you kind heartedly donated generously to supporting in 2018.

I posted more details about those allegations here

I reached out to Penny Appeal to cut ties with them. At least until they handle these awful disgusting allegations and rebuild the trust they've shattered in so many people's hearts. I would encourage you to do the same.  I will leave it up to you on what you'd like to see happen with the money you kindly donated, but I wanted to inform you of what's been happening since you too trusted these children were being taken care of safely and responsibly.

Penny Appeal's latest statement on the matter is here.

You can reach out to Penny Appeal USA directly to raise any concerns and questions that you have.

Gambia Update - I Am A Doofus!

Sorry for the double email! I forgot to mention I am a total doofus and apparently don't know how to create working weblinks lol.  Here is the link to the school for blind children we are building in Palestine this year:

https://www.launchgood.com/project/braille_friendly_books_and_education_for_blind_children_in_palestine#!/

And again,  I traveled with PennyAppeal USA again this year to see their efforts to support Friends of the Blind, the only full time school for blind children in the entire country.  The Palestinian education system unfortunately does not have the proper resources to educate these kids so for most of them this is the only way they can get any kind of education. The cool thing about this place is all the braille books are manufactured in house using these nifty braille printers - because of how difficult it is to find Arabic and Islamic books in braille.

Gambia Update - Your Donation Helped Us Do It!

Asalam alaikum,  it's Aman Ali! I hope that this beloved of Ramadan is treating you well.  I just wanted to let you know, thanks to your donation last year, we were able to build the solar powered orphanages in Gambia!  We were able to raise MORE THAN $25,000, and we're so grateful you helped us CRUSH our initial goal. The construction is done and look at how beautiful these spaces are in the pics below.

In the meantime, I wanted to let you know that our mission this year is to build a school for blind children in Palestine.  I traveled with PennyAppeal USA again this year to see their efforts to support Friends of the Blind, the only full time school for blind children in the entire country.

If you are interested in supporting these beloved angels and want to help give them the confidence they deserve, you can find out more here:

And without further ado, enjoy the pics you helped make happen for these angels in Gambia!

Orphan Village in Gambia - Spread the word about Saffron Road's challenge!

Asalam Alaikum and Ramadan Mubarak yo! I just wanted to thank you personally for supporting our fantastic initiative to lift these angels in Gambia for poverty.  In less than a week, we have raised ALMOST 15 THOUSAND DOLLARS!!!

Now, the awesome folks at  Saffron Road (the brand at Whole Foods that make all those insanely yummy chickpea snacks, gourmet frozen trays and soups) want to get involved.
https://www.facebook.com/SaffronRoadFood/posts/1933628029989417

For every SHARE their FB status gets, Saffron Road will donate $1 to the orphan village we're building!

Let's BANKRUPT THIS COMPANY by SHARING THIS STATUS AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. Like I said, your support has helped us raise almost 15 THOUSAND DOLLARS on social media in only a WEEK. Imagine what we can do with Saffron Road on board!

All you have to do is hit the SHARE button on Facebook for that status. That's it! And by doing that, that is one dollar going towards changing the lives of these children FOREVER.

I promise you it will be the easiest and rewarding thing you've done all day.

And feel free to spread the word about the Orphan Village we're building by sharing the URL:  http://launchgood.com/amanvillage

Every single penny of this is going towards uplifting these children. It's tax deductible and Zakat eligible too!

Share this with as many people as you can! Let's bankrupt this company (ok not really because those Bombay Spice Chickpea snacks are so delightful and scrumptious).

Thank you so much for your support.  Seriously, you have no idea how many lives you are changing with your efforts.
