Empowering young Moroccan women to become leaders in STEM-related industries

As biology and health university students, we noticed that the quality of STEM education at the university level far surpassed that which we were exposed to during our high school years. Camp Alima was created out of a desire to expose Moroccan girls, like ourselves, to the necessary scientific experimentation and leadership skills that would benefit them in high school and throughout their academic and professional careers.

A summer camp by students, for students

Camp Alima is an entirely student-run organization focused on the advancement of skills relating to science, technology, engineering, math, and leadership among high-school aged Moroccan girls. In a week-long summer camp held during the first week of July, 10 female students will be exposed to an interactive and rigorous curriculum consisting of experiments relating to the STEM fields such as biology and computer science as well as a leadership development component. Selected students will have the opportunity to engage in self-reflection, personalized skill development, and thought-provoking investigation.

Meet our Village Advisor: Mariam Boukaidi

Hello, my name is Mariam Boukaidi, I am 29 years old, I live in Ouazzane, Morocco, and I am an English high school teacher. I love my job so much for its wonderful role in making generations of good citizens of the world. I also love participating in extracurricular activities that aim at involving students more in their learning process and applying what they have learned in real life situations. That is why I am extremely interested in Camp Alima, as I think it is going to be of great benefit for Ouazzane female students to gain more self confidence and be more courageous to follow the STEM fields.

Our goal is to leave a lifelong impact

We hope that, through Camp Alima, we are able to spark a lifelong interest in STEM fields among camp participants as well as empower them to view themselves as scientists. The empowered young girls of today will become the leaders of tomorrow.
