Doorstep Learning Programme

Education, life skills and progression support for young girls (aged between 5 and 16) forced into domestic labour in Sylhet, Bangladesh.

The UK Bangladesh Education Trust’s work is focussed on the 3.2 million children under 14 in Bangladesh who are forced to work rather than go to school because of the poverty endured by their families. 

Our priority is supporting young girls aged from 5 to 16, hidden from view as they work long hours doing domestic work in people’s homes, often at risk of abuse and physical violence.

Our Doorstep Learning Programme is currently supporting 500 child domestic workers in Sylhet, Bangladesh. Three times a week a team of 20 community teachers visit the homes where children are at work, literally taking education to their doorstep. They teach these children reading, writing, numeracy and life skills and at the same time develop their confidence and wellbeing. 

To date, 2,333 child labourers in Sylhet have enrolled onto Doorstep Learning, with 1,047 children progressing to mainstream schools or vocational training or leaving their place of work. In 2022 the
Doorstep Learning Programme supported 432 children with 232 children progressing out of child labour - a rate of 54%. The remaining 46% of children who continued to work all developed basic education skills that would help them in the future.

Gaining an education for these girls is a passport for a better life, for themselves and for their families.

It costs just £158 per year to provide education to one girl, giving her hope of a brighter future. That’s less than 50p per day to help a young girl build a better life for herself.
