Iltizam Relief Society Water Well Project in Rural Malaysia
The aim: Build water wells in the rural villages of Sabah and remote islands on the Sea of Sulu (Sabah).
Target: Build 50 wells
Immediate Need: 5 wells
Achieved: 15 wells
Future projects: Well numbers 16 to 20 are under feasibility study.
Each well will serve the Masjids, schools, and also rural villages with approximately 20 - 100 families or at least 800 to 1,000 souls.
Cost: USD 5500 per well
(Note: Depending on the location and local requirements, each well will be built with a water system that consists of a water tank, a water tower, and one or two petrol/diesel-powered water pumps. In case there is an electricity supply, the electric water pump will be provided. The water well area will also be fenced and roofed).
Background:
Iltizam Relief Society (ILTIZAM) has completed 13 water well projects in Malaysia so far; all are in the state of Sabah. To be more precise, twelve were built on five remote islands and one was built in a remote village on the mainland. All are built off the coast of the state of Sabah, Malaysia.
May Allah reward abundantly all of you who have donated to all these projects.
However, these remote islands and a few remote villages on the mainland are relying heavily on rainwater harvesting for clean water supplies. Therefore, we need to build as many as 37 more wells in Sabah and this is why we are here asking for your help.
Why is it so expensive?
Our aim is to give clean water to the poor in rural Malaysia and our focus will be on the areas in the state of Sabah, East Malaysia.
Our main challenge is that it is a very costly project. The transportation of goods to the islands requires the charter of a big boat or ferry, as items are purchased from the mainland of Sabah.
Why Sabah?
Officially, many districts in Sabah state are the poorest districts in Malaysia, and despite Malaysia already attaining independence for 65 years, many rural villages here are not accessible except with huge 4x4 vehicles or by boat due to their geographical challenges.
Therefore, building a water well will be extremely costly and only a handful of contractors are willing to undertake the work due to challenging logistics in rural Sabah.
This also means that, if the project is on the island, we will also need to charter a large boat to transport the building materials, which can only be purchased from the mainland.
Often, we also have to rent an excavator machine to dig the well, especially when it is a completely new well and the soil is hard to dig.
This machine helps to complete the building of the well in 3 days; otherwise, the contractors will have to manually dig by hand, which will be time-consuming and cost more in labour.
And the water well that we built in Malaysia is not only a water well, it will also include a water tank, and a water tower and is equipped with a diesel/petrol engine water pump.
The water well area is also being fenced and the well is also covered with a concrete top to prevent children from falling into it or from being polluted. Basically, it's a water system that we build not just a well.
Our water project can be illustrated in below sketch:
ILTIZAM’S next project will be on Banggi Island, Sabah. To ensure cost savings, there will be at least 4 water well projects carried out on this island.
Pulau Banggi (Banggi Island)
This is the biggest island in Malaysia. It is bigger than the resort islands of Langkahwi and Penang. However, it is the least developed and poorest island in Malaysia. The island is only accessible via a ferry service from mainland Kudat town, which takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. There are only two services per day, one in the morning and the other in the afternoon.
The sites for the four proposed water well projects are located in four villages: Kampung Bantunan, Kampung Sebumbong (2 wells), and Kampung Batu Putih.
Except for Batu Putih Village, the other three villages are located on the far north end of the island, and from here, islands in the Philippines can be seen with our naked eyes.
Give water! This is one of the best forms of charity!
Giving clean water is a form of Sadaqah Jariyah (continuous charity). It will not only benefit the poor villagers in this life but also benefit the donors in the next life for as long as this water well is being used.
On the authority of Sa’d bin ‘Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him), that he said, ‘O Messenger of Allah! Umm (the mother of) Sa’d has died, so which charity is best?” He (blessings and peace be upon him) replied, “Water (is best).” He said, “So he dug a well and said, “This (well) is for Umm Sa’d’” (Narrated Abu Dawud)

We, Iltizam Relief Society (formerly known as Al-I’tisam Relief Program Association), is a registered NGO, based in Malaysia. We have been working in the humanitarian mission as far back as 2013, providing aid, necessary living spaces, clean water projects, and food to targeted families and individuals in order to spread the message of a United Ummah. We believe that by being on the ground and interacting with these individuals, we can understand, share and relieve their pain, one family at a time. However, we cannot do this alone. We are glad to announce that our water well project number 15 is has been completed in Sebumbung Village, on the Banggi Island, Malaysia.
This village will take about 2 hours to reach from the main jetty on the island, if the weather is good. If it were a rainy day, reaching this remote village would not be possible due to the muddy road conditions.
It is very challenging and takes a lot of effort to build the well and the water system in this village.
It also needs a lot of manpower. This village has no accommodations; the contractors and our volunteers have to sleep in this masjid until the project is completed.
Other than logistics, manpower is another contributing factor to the high cost of building a water well and water system on this island.
Please support our upcoming concrete water well project numbers 16–20, also on Banggi Island, but for other remote villages.
The underground water source has been found. Currently, they scoop water from this manually dug well, and the water can be used only for washing. While drinking, they have to buy bottled drinking water and harvest rainwater.
We will dig deeper, install concrete ringwells, and pump the water with a motor engine. We will also build a water tower, and from the tower, the water will flow to the village houses and masjid.
Please note that Banggi Island is the biggest island in Malaysia, located near Borneo Island, but this island is one of the most economically backward in Malaysia.
Currently, almost the entire island relies on rainwater harvesting or groundwater for its clean water needs.

This is water well number 13, in Bantunan Village, on Banggi Island, Malaysia.
This village has no telephone or internet network.
About 150 people will benefit from this water well, including a masjid in this village.
The well is located about 150 feet from the masjid, and the water tank is placed next to the masjid.
From here, the village will do their own plumbing to flow the water to their respective homes.

There is no telephone or internet network in this village; hence, the update on this project is delayed because we have to wait for our contractors and volunteers to return to the town on this island.
About 150 people will benefit from this water well, including a masjid in this village.

The wells are to be built on the northern tip of the island, which takes 2 hours by 4x4 vehicles and about 3 hours by heavy vehicles.
There are three water wells to be built in three remote villages.
These villages have no mobile phone or internet network; hence, we can only update you on the progress of these projects upon their completion and our contractor's return to the mainland.

We conducted a feasibility study on three remote villages on Banggi Island, Sabah (Malaysia). Banggi Island is the biggest island in Malaysia, located near Borneo. But it is underdeveloped. Once completed, there will be a total of seven water well systems built on this island by Iltizam.

Build a water well and gain rewards for a long time
Poor people living on the remote islands of Sabah have no choice but to rely on rainwater or groundwater.
Most of them will rely on poorly built and maintained water wells, which are exposed to pollution.
Iltizam Relief builds a water well on these islands that is easy to maintain and well guarded from pollution and safer.
We also build a water tower so that the water will flow to the houses on gravity pulls, thereby saving the effort to collect water from the well.
It's worth it to build a water well for these people because there is no other way to source fresh water, so it will last longer. The longer it is useful, you stand to gain rewards from Allah, insha Allah.

Today we announced that we have completed the 6th and 7th water wells projects.
These water wells will provide clean water to a nearby mosque and hundreds of families in the remote villages of Dogoton One (Water Well No. 6) and Dogoton Two (Water Well No.7), on Banggi Island.
The water well that we built in Malaysia is not only a water well, it will also include a water tank, and a water tower and is equipped with a diesel/petrol engine water pump. The water well area is also being fenced and the well is also covered with a concrete top to prevent children from falling into it or from being polluted.
The diesel- or petrol-powered water pump will suck the water from the well and send the water to the tank, and from the tank, the water will easily flow by gravitational force to the mosque and village houses. This simple system they never had in these villages.
Imagine, without our help, the poor villagers only rely on rainwater!

These villages where the water well projects are running, have very weak signals hence our team may only update the latest development once they come back to the nearest town.
