Lebanon is home to nearly 1 million Syrian refugees; 490,000 of whom
are children of school age under the age of 18. Bekaa Valley has the
highest concentration of Syrian refugees in Lebanon. The country itself
hosts the highest number of refugees per capita in the world, or one in
four. About 220,000 Syrian children attend lessons – as part of the
second shift system in Lebanon or in morning classes alongside Lebanese
pupils – but more than half of them are not in schools. Many Syrian
refugee families do not register their children in public schools
because many of them are unable to afford the fees. As a result, these
children are exposed to child labour and forced to work in the
agriculture industry. The Syrian refugee adults are restricted to access
the labour market in Lebanon, which often forces children to become
breadwinners. Moreover, the children are paid less than adults; they are
not required to show identification papers at checkpoints, and they are
unaware of their rights.
Due to the aggravated condition, more children will be deprived from accessing education, the more they will face mental and psychological growth barriers in the future. Therefore, it is essential to grant more and more Syrian refugee children the chance of accessing non-formal education and psychological support program through the provision of non-formal schools for them besides
their tents. READ Foundation focuses on providing an education for children that have no access or little access. Teaching the families and the children about their rights can only be done through some form of education.
This project will be implemented through the rehabilitation and recycling of 5 caravans in the camps and will accommodate up to 120 children. 3 caravans will be furnished to be used as classrooms for the 120 children. 1 caravan will be furnished to be used as an office for the principal of this school and 1 caravan will be redesigned into a bathroom that will be installed beside the classrooms.
The project will ensure the provision of high quality of education for 120 out of school children through directing them towards non-formal education for one academic year. This will decrease the rate of child labour and enhance the psychosocial status of 120 children through directing all the students who will be registered in the educational program towards the psychosocial support program.
