Abolition Ummah is a Muslim led organization that supports abolition of all systems in the prison industrial complex, including police. This past Ramadan, we launched the Eid Away from Home Campaign as a way to extend our support and solidarity with our incarcerated kin. Alhumdullilah, the project was extremely successful. With the help of about 60 volunteers, we were able to send cards to 150 incarcerated Muslims.
Muslims are over represented in state prisons and are facing further isolation this Eid as a result of COVID 19. Letters are a great way to cut through isolation and remind their incarcerators that they are cared for and their conditions are being monitored. Our incarcerated brothers and sisters must be centered in the fight for Black liberation. There are over a thousand Muslim prisoners in Connecticut, and our goal is to send at least 400 cards this upcoming Eid.
Donations will contribute to commissioning Muslim artists for card designs, printing cards, and purchasing stamps. Any additional funds left over from this campaign will be split between incarcerated Muslims books and organizational fees. We will post receipts for all transactions on our Instagram @abolitionummah. Please reach out to contact@abolitionummah.org with any questions or concerns.
